Depands how newbie one is.
If you don't know anything about music making, you'd better learn the basics of production on a relatively simple software imo.
If you know a thing or two about music and you're looking for new powerful tool to work with, then you might want to start with one of the more serious pieces.
My personal recomendation is Logic Studio 8.

I started with Cubase, and then a bit later on with Logic and have found them fairly easy. I looked at FL & Reason not to long ago and it just doesn't make sense, I can't work them for shit! I say jump in at the 'Deep-end' with Cubase or Logic etc. |

Starting with Reason is a good idea i think because it is quite easy...just to learn the basics... (midi programming, synth tweaking, fxs...) . I started with Reason 6 years ago, and i moved to Cubase when i really felt that i was limited.
Now, i'm going hardware
A good tip is to learn by your different plugin's presets. I mean that you can learn how a parameter/knob affects the sound. |
