Good news for new artists

Ableton has announced the release of Live 5 (www.ableton.com), set for sometime in late July. Live was never really a good sequencer for making complex music because it didn't have a freeze function and bouncing down to audio clips was not a very intuitive way to work. But Live 5 will have the long-awaited freeze function and will be great for new artists. It is for Mac and PC, supports VST and AU and will have a lot of new remixing capabilities as well. Why should this be the choice of a new artist that has no sequencer yet? Because it is also great for doing "on the fly" live sets (which is the goal of all of us fledgling artists, right?). You are allowed to install it on two machines, so that could mean one on your DAW and one on your laptop for performances. I'm not on commission from Ableton! In fact, until now I never really supported them because of their lack of freeze function, but this changes everything. Just something to think about.

Looking forward to that.
I must say I think the bouncing in Live is fast and easy as it is and I never thought that the lack of freeze function was a problem.
Live is already by far the best sequencer for production when it comes to the workflow IMO.

Unfortunally it does not sound so good. I tried really hard to get perfect gain structure and figure out if it was anyway I could make it sound like Logic...but the result when mixing many channels sounds messy to me.
And it only supports four output channels, so I can't do the mixing on my Pulsar instead

But for live it's great and I will use it for DJ'ing on my next gig...there it's unbeatable.           (``·.¸(``·.¸(``·.¸¸.·`´)¸.·`´)¸.·`´)

Beta testing begins this month. And to Spindrift, it may be just the way I work that I can't bounce everything to audio. In order for me to save processing power I would have to bounce down a lot of channels and that means everytime I need to make changes I have to bring the instrument back in again, pull up the saved midi file, and rerecord. Freeze is so much better because it allows you to keep everything available and all you have to do is click unfreeze to make changes to that channel.

I very rarely go back and chnge things, once I'm happy with how a part sounds I move on.
But I normally leave the midi tracks as a habit anyways, but just deactivate the plugins to free the CPU.           (``·.¸(``·.¸(``·.¸¸.·`´)¸.·`´)¸.·`´)

There's also some more features with Live 5 that are really going to turn some heads. Automatic tempo mapping for audio samples, and it supports mp3....

I can already see a whole slough of new remixes that will happen in the upcoming year... Crazy stuff, and mad props to Ableton. For live sets it really can't be beaten..           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

The sound issue is discussed a lot in the forums over at www.ableton.com.
As always when discussing if digital products sound different it's a heated discussion and some people claim that it cannot possible be any difference because it's all simple maths and then there is people who clearly can hear the difference.
I would say that it's rather the "sound scientists" who think there can be no difference based on their intellectual knowledge about digital audio.

I did test it myself by mixing 12 tracks of audio in logic and live at identical levels and then analyzing phase correlation and frequency response as well as mixing the files together phase inverted.
The difference was very big indeed.

When it comes to using it for live or DJing that does not bother me so much though.
PA systems don't have nearly the definition as a pair of studio monitors and you would normally mix so many individual tracks as when producing.
When mixing less than eight tracks it is very hard to notice any difference whatsoever in my experience, and the advantages of using Live in those circumstances is too big to be concerned with fidelity.

In the studio though I just find it hard to have the inspiration flow with a more muddy sound than I'm used to.           (``·.¸(``·.¸(``·.¸¸.·`´)¸.·`´)¸.·`´)
