elecro jazz group who use a host of hardware to do a live show....

the show itself is pretty cool i guess, and the music is very nice, but i think they have been made out to be more than they are...

i only made my statement because they are now being hailed as south african electronic pioneers, which is utter bullshit...compared to what us trancekops do they are minnows

however they do sound pretty good and are worth a listen..if you are into houselike jazz electro shit

They're not bad.

No offense to Mr.Shift... but as musicians.... Goldfish will beat Shift hands down.

These guys are trained jazz musicians, my friend... do not knock them. My sister has sang with their more conventional jazz band.. Breakfast Included on many an occassion. They are great guys and excellent musicians who are experimenting on the lighter side of electronica. Please note "lighter" side.

I don't know where you're getting your information with regard to "south african electronic pioneers"... but whoever said that is not very well informed. Take a listen to a band like Lark..... that's a band pushing the boundaries... doing stuff that's never been done before in Cape Town. There have been pioneers who have come.. who have gone... there's always somebody who wants to be a star, my friend.

At the end of the day... Goldfish are playing on the more commercial market... (and that's great.. cos that's what THEY want)... I don't think they're too fussed about getting deep, dark, and underground with cutting edge electronica. I don't think that they write their own articles .... their articles are written by journalists who really dig their music... Everybody is entitled to an opinion.

They're musicians who are doing something different from psytrance..., dude. Big deal. Respect them.

Peace.           Mind my mind.

i know they are breakfast included, i know them etc,...and i do respect them as musicians as being brilliant because they are very talent wrt jazz....

ok so pioneer is a bit much , but i think they get to much credit for the electronic side of things, within the commercial and general market....

what i am trying to say is this....yes they do some electronic stuff with live jazz which sounds nice...but people are making them out to be more than they are ....

oh dear i am causing kak again with my ramblings.

ignore.

i can understand what you're saying l337...
totally...

but the music game is a hard one to play...
and they're playing it the way that they want to play it ... and it seems to be going well for them.

i suppose it also irks me slightly that they get praise for being cutting edge on the electronica side of things....
because there IS so much more going on in Cape Town electronically... musically....

but... in the mass market of dead cats....

most people aren't aware that certain kinds of music even exist. You create something that everybody loves.... ie.. jazz.... combined with something that is a bit experimental.. ie.. a tinge of electronica.... it's always going to work. it's a good balance.

it's worked throughout the evolution of pop... why shouldn't it work for golfdish?

peace.

well they are insanely popular on the commercial front, so it is working....

i think cape town is just dominated by house music at the moment , because the average cape townians are groupie whores and 5fm rates that house is hip hop and happening ...

from my own personal point of view another Upstairs styled club would make me happy.....Upstairs was awesome imho

its funny that Psy trance is probaly one of south africa's most successful music exports yet, hardly anyone knows about it ....

Its funny that most of the people on this forum are bitching that there are too many people know about psytrance. Now it seems that your bitching that not enough people know about it.

Then again, I guess Im learning that forums are just one giant bitching platform.

So here goes: Everyone in this town but me is a "groupie whore" and no one else has any taste and everything that was good is dead and everything that is now happening sucks. Oh, and everyone succesful is seriously talentless and overrated.

very true ratinakage... although i think this particular thread isn't too bad (although the title is a bit harsh considering the content).

but after reading the threads of various countries i start to wonder whether anyone actually likes psytrance here... at least in its current form??

sorry off topic.. and i'm not attacking anyone here either...           difficile est non saturam scribere

Caligula and RatinKage....

i think as far as bashig on forums go, its a natural human tendency...everyone is just vented what they consider to be problems etc...

as far as this topic goes wrt Rat's commment, i am not bitching about not enough people knowing about psy, i am just noting how ironic it is that Psy has been so successful in SA yet it isnt recognised as being successful

Caligula,....we are trying to be more positive here i think, ccheck my lastest post on SA Festivals, plus the manner with which this is being discussed,...

sorry about the title tho, its is a bit harsh imho.

btw...no need to be sarcastic Rat, everyone else here is being quite serious....

this isnt a bitch for fun....its a discussion between adults on a topic....

@l337: i realised you were trying to be positive in this thread.. thats why i said its merely the title which seemed a bit harsh.. in agreeing with ratinakage i was more referring to other threads... for example some of the festival ones... these guys come in and tell everyone repeatedly how shit the festival being discussed is, and how dishonest the organisers are.. some guys just wont let up..

Aside from a few timecode disputes the SA side is generally pretty chilled in my opinion.           difficile est non saturam scribere

Re: Goldfish...

I once played a birthday party where Goldfish were doing the full live show before I came on and make no mistake, these two guys are excellent musicians, very talented in fact.

What they were playing may not be to everyone's taste (certainly not mine) but I appreciated the fact that they really got the crowd going with the whole liveness of the show.

With that said, I often got the feeling while watching them play that there was almost too much on offer in terms of gadgets and tech, like imagine two large flight cases (1m x 1.5m) crammed FULL of gear, and goldfish working their asses off during the show just to use it all, grab a piece of gear/instrument, do a little something with it, put it down and grab the next piece of gear without a moments reflection on what the last piece just added...

It felt a bit rushed, or crammed may be a better word, I would have liked to see them do a little more performing/exploring with a less gear if that makes any sense...

Anyhow, when they packed up "the show" and I setup 2 tiny little cdj100's and a djm300 mixer, the table looked *very* empty afterwards, like I was looking at my gear through a pair of binoculars the wrong way round, and I could juuusst begin to make it out in the middle of the vast, now v. empty, table ;-)

So yes, commercial, but they can rock a crowd, very talented musicians, as impressive as it looks, maybe a little too much gear on offer (ott? with all due respect tho ;-)

cheers,
