Im trying to use Fruity Loops 4 to make old school Goa Trance. Im speaking about TRUE Goa Trance here, not commercial variants.

1) My main problem is generally finding & choosing appropriate samples to use in my songs. FL sample library is pretty chaotic for me, or maybe i just dont know what to look for.

Where do i learn the basics? I mean what do all those things mean like "3x Osc", "TS404", etc.

2) I also have problems making a true Goa bassline & melody - the two most important hallmarks of Goa Trance.

Can anyone tell me anything about making Goa basslines & melodies?

3) Also, if anyone has any general beginner tips, i would be glad to hear them

4) Nice forum!!

try to look into the old threads on http://www.psynews.org/

and here r some tips i'd like to add..
first, try to upgrade your fl version.
and the things like '3xosc', 'ts404' are all synths

the 'fruit kick' plugin should help you create those punchy goa kicks with ease

Do not use FL library you will sound... well all "fruity". Get free samples from the net or buy some. You can also learn to synthesize your own.

The basics all are over the net, google, wikipedia, and this forum altho what you need to learnis not about goa it is about sound design, audio enginering, acoustics, machines, history of electronic music etc...

3xOSC = 3 Oscillators
TS404 = Just another number synth name (i dont know the real maning)

Read the forum's mother of all threads and don't stop trying. I got decent bassline not after a year of constantly trying (buy monitors).

Learn to play a real isntrument, learn music theory, understand scales, modes, progressions... then you'll find what you need to create melodies, there are not recipes. Try, try, try and when you get frustrated and think about quiting and never touching a sequencer again, then try again.

This is an activity in which the main learning source is experience: trial and error.

Tips are all over the site. My best tip: Understand what you are doing by tweaking this or that plugin. Understand synthesis and digital audio basics: waveforms, decibels, frequencies, envolvents, etc. Read a lot is all on the net.

Also: Listen to your favorite music and learn how everypart of ir is done, try tyo mimic what you like then you'll find your own way.

My suggestion, in case you don't even know what 3xosc means, it not to ask how to choose samples or how to create kick & bass, just sit on your pc, start your daw and start exploring (and/or read the manual).           Triplag Music

you asked for the "basic psy line" . . .

what very helped me here was this thread:
http://forum.isratrance.com/bassline-tutorial/

maybe a little bit hard for you to understand, but if you follow the guid step per step, its a huge step foward.

Ahhhh oldschool Goa Trance...

What you really want to do here if you're SERIOUS is at the very LEAST either pickup a used/old Roland TR-303 (these things are cheap now), get one of the newer retro mockup versions that gets good reviews, OR find a VST synth that accurately reproduces the sound of the TR-303.

This is the synth that created the Acid sound, and eventually created Goa Trance.           http://www.soundcloud.com/djKAHN

If i have time later on ill do a basic pattern for you which you can try and experiment with your self...

but do get a newer version of FL studio, i would say try and get your hands on FL studio 8..

what you need to do is learn more about sound creation before you can get down and dirty and make a track! Like Elad said
