i am sure everyone here knows what i am talking about..
those parts of good'old goa tracks where the kick and drums dissapear and then these amazing melodies that sound so repetetie with slight changes building up going faster. like...good old 303 sounds and squeeks and ahh it rules, and then the kick and drums come back and u go balistic.
well what is this called? and where did it go? i miss it... it's so fucking intense and amazing... havn't heard this technique for so long... and that's sad. i tried to create something like this and i have no clue on how to do it, any ideas? track recomendations? anything... |

Basically, you miss the big melodic breaks in tracks. They're too long a break for parties today, but good god, they're what someone wants to hear at home. Well, go for a few classics like:
Phreaky - Paranormal Activity, Tornado MFG - Peaceful Relaxation, Shape the Future Doof - Lets Turn On Koxbox - Stratosfear (in the opening it's SOOO well done) Astral Projection - Let There Be Light
Just to show you that even in goatrance, it was done in so many different ways...
Just improvise, that (IMO) is the soul of a good track. |

Alright, here's my way of doing these up-lifting melodic parts (i'll explain it using fruity, 'cause we all know and love it :)):
In a certain point in the track, after presenting a few elements and building a certain story, start a snare drum roll - You know, fill all the 16 (or 32 or 64) notes in a pattern with the snare. In parallel, use a reversed cymbal sample located in the right place so it's peak would be in the exact beginning of the next pattern (jeez, it's so difficult to explain such things by writing...).
Right in the beginning of the next pattern put one bass drum sample, and start a melody using the TS-404 or import an audio file of a melody written in Rebirth's TB-303. The majority of the classical track's melodies are written in a certain oriental scale, such as C minor, harmonic D minor or harmonic F minor (musical theory knowledge will greatly assist in this phase). Make sure there are slides in the melody, and that is written over 2 octaves (it makes the melody interesting and diverse). Of course, this is not a formula, simply a suggestion. Anything that will sound good will also do :).
Let the melody be played once or twice, than slowly start adding the drums. A simple suggestion for a build-up: After the melody is played once or twice, play a bass drum sample along with a cymbal crash exactly when it start playing the third time. In the beginning of the third time the melody is played you should also start a snare roll, as described above, with a gradual velocity changes (the snare will be slightly louder every time it plays). Keep the snare playing until the end of the fourth time the melody is played, then...
"...I'm sorry, we're closed. No more professional secrets will be shared today. Please come back tomorrow..." :)

The point isn't to copy off someone else or to follow instructions, just take the basic idea, and make it your own =) |
