Goa & Psytrance sounds

Hey guys - Ive been wanting to get into producing goa/psytrance, but have run into barriers along th way. Right now I made a good bassline with a basic drumline for the foundation but here is where I get stuck. I get totally lost when it comes to leads in this genre (I mainly produce ambient) because in some of it there are very unconventional swoops and swishes but in other tracks I hear pretty straightforward sounds that are just really layered (a la Astral Projection). So this is my dilemma - I cant seem to make or find sounds that fit into this style. Is it the automation or something else that Im missing or what? Thanks. |

i see u switched over from kvr 
To begin best is to check out the sticky threats on the top - there are really a lot of useful tips in.
If u got a question to a special lead post a short sample.
I think u are looking for saw leads with pitch down envelopes - and sey automation, i.e., the filter cutoff, is very important to get a phat lead.

You still have alot to learn, hey I've been in the scene for about 4 years now and I still learn everyday. And I garanty you that for the next year you wont be making any complete tracks. But the trick is to keep experimenting, thats how you learn.
-your lead probably doesn't fit in with the bassline cause your changing scales. Try playing the same notes you play in the bassline, doing diferent combinations and arrangements.. It should sound better. Than play around that. And don't just start adding efects w/automations without knowing what it does.
The problem could also be the actual sound your playing..
To play a lead you should have it in your head, and then do your best to make what your thinking about. But for that you have to know how to make the sounds, and which sounds you can make. It's all about practice. You must spend months experimenting and practicing, and and months searching this forum. All the info you need is here, especialy in the old topics.

you gave good advices here but thats a funny7 statment ! how is it going to know what fx does if he doesn't experiment.
with time and experience naturally he'll eventually get to know what to do and what to use. there is a creative process since the very beginning and probably even more then. like its been said read the tread .
go to cosmosis website and download he's albino patches.... good stuff which will get you started.
z3ta is a good synth to get a lot of sound youve heard before. |

No, the problem is not that I don't know music theory, because I know the basics and am in progress of reading a book about more advanced stuff. As for FX and sound design - I can say that I know fairly well what Im doing - especially with making patches for EDM, because they are usually much simpler than what I have to use for ambient music. The thing is that Im not quite sure of combinations of sounds for this genre just yet. I guess I just have to practice on. Thanks for the advice guys.
EDIT: Oh yeah, and as for sound clips, I don't really have any specific ones... |

yeah I gave up on trying to make the sounds that everybody else is making and decided to make sounds that I thought sounded cool

My best advice for goa / psy inspiration is to visualize in your mind what it is you want to make, how you want it to sound, from there tweak the synths until you get the sound you are looking for, after trial and error you will eventually learn how to make a synth or vst sound as you want, or at least somewhat close to it hopefully, i think it is similar to painting/illustrating where you first have to imagine what you wanna paint/draw, and then your fingers will try to achieve that on the canvas/paper.

fuck, dont give a bullshit!! xolax all u need to have psytrance leads in astral projection on ANY other unconventional style is !gator! or automated velocity on the 1 LONG NOTE sample + good material from synth ( if you want to have really good sound dont use vst)

this one is only a base, you can create many different things when u start to use more long notes one by one,add fx,automated cutoff,FM mod etc etc. but the most important thing in this kind of lead is automated velocity on 1 note not 100000 different notes |
