What is the diffrence between a goa/psytrace kick and a hard trance or general dance kick? I have tried the Infected Mushroom and Postunder tutorials but I'm sure if what I have made is close to what sounds right. Basically what makes a goa kick? |

well you can make the psy-trance kick the infected mushroom way (in soundforge) and it really is the best way(big up to infected for sharing this info), but you will have to do it quite a few times before you master it and come up with a killer kickdrum.
with hardtrance, hardstyle and hardhouse, there is a little more that goes into making a kickdrum. some very well controlled distortion and probably a 909 snare will be added to get that hammering kick sound. i would love to try this method in psy-trance some time, but if you make a kick like this, you can`t use the typical psy-basslines either. |

Goa kicks are not as dirty as hard trance kick so I guess I just need to make some simple non-distorted kicks. I've already made some kicks with stomper and other drumsynths. I guess I could just eq the dirt out of them. |

Best is to make kicks with soundforge and use multiband compression and eqs for them. Try iZotope Ozone for them, and maybe some saturation with something like Discodsp Thrillme compressor.

Personally.. I think one of the main distinguishing factors of a new school psytrance kick is the 'click' before the sub-punch.
When i create kickdrums (almost always in stomper) this is what I do:
Make a click (or import a click) and make it last between 10 and 25 milliseconds (do a pitch bend which sounds click like hehe) and then after that do another longer, deeper (lower) pitch bend starting from whenever the click finishes: "click-thump"
I then import this kick into soundforge and change the envelopes of the different parts -
Generally I tend to carefully fade in both the click and the thump... it becomes a more softer dense sounding kick then (similar to kicks like 1200 Mics, Absolum, Pop Stream etc.)
For me it works like a charm hehe
Anyway... everyone has there own kick techniques (I tend to apply a few FX on the kick to spice it up abit hehe )
Peace
P.S. a tip: Steal a kick from a track you like the sound of and analyse its shape then try to copy it hehe |

yes i`ve tried distortion on psy kick and it doesn`t sound to bad if you do it right, but i only did it ones. it is 4sure best to keep it simple and clean. |

Hehe... jinx
For sure though... keep the kick clean for a punchier sound (and IMO a deeper better sound) |
