Making a quick research on this forum, you could find about 21542 threads dealing with this issue.

Anyways, you have several ways to look at this question :

Fashion point of view :
"In his 1996 interview, Ray Castle (in Cole, 1996a) stated that "it 's only in the last two years we've started hearing these words 'Goa trance'....before that I used to call the parties 'Trance Dance'." Steve Psyko (in Cole 1996b) believes that the term was invented by the English, because they "always want to put a label on something like that". Further more, as with punk, "they have stereotyped Goa trance; they have decided that Goa trance is just one kind of music."
"The currency of terminology is also subject to waves of fashion. One UK party promoter on the Goa Trance mailing list (Barron, 1996), claimed in October 1996 that the 'G word' is now so unfashionable that "if you went into a record label over here (i.e. Dragonfly, TIP, Flying Rhino etc.) and called the music Goa Trance you would be laughed at"; and furthermore that, if you used the term on a party flyer, no-one would attend the party. He suggests "Psychedelic Trance" as a more appropriate term since most of the music is being made in the UK, Australia, Israel and the US, not in Goa."
(from the brilliant essay http://www.geocities.com/pyrofire666666/history.html)

Historical point of view : Goa Trance refers to a certain sound, with lots of references to hinduism (in the eastern-influenced melodies, samples, CD cover visuals...). This genre is considered to be dead since 1996 or something like that.

Hope it helps.

Goa has more of a focus on melody and the vibe, whereas psytrance tends to focus on the effects and the beat/groove. That's how I tend to see it... and Goa trance is *not* dead.

Thanks, guys.
The point is, it might be a bit more logical to use "Goa trance" for any music that is actually played at trance parties in Goa or/and has been inspired by Goa'n'stuff.
Any ideas?

well, imo all psytrance music is originally inspired from the old goa sounds.
but i wouldn't call modern psytrance music - goa trance.

i agree with gilad refael... psychedelic trance comes from goa trance...only it a much evolved and progressive style. so much so that the two sound very different today!!!

goatrance is very much around though...and each year there is alot of stuff..old and new.. sold at goa flea markets!!!
dj goagil is a good example of goa trance style..he's considered to be one of the pioneers..and he's very much around.

i personally prefer psychedelic trance...progress is good!!!

Whom would you include into the top 3 (or maybe 5) typical representatives of Goa on the one hand and Psychedelic on the other?
(meaning those who write music)

Thanks, hod gavriel.
It's not about getting an idea (I have been collecting trance since 1996 and been to Goa more than once) .
It's about getting to know what people around the world think.
[besides, there may be new names among this or that "top 5"]

for the latest goa stuff i was able to hear, try steptime (he actually is from goa ), one of the only artists i've heard lately to produce new skillful goa-trance.
i'd say goa-trance and psy have a lot in common, but there're those typical sounds you get in goa-trance, some typical mind bending loops.
try hearing sets from goa-gil or maybe even his forest of the saints cd from years back (memories....). have fun studying the differance           Super-teen extraordinaire Freakazoid! Freakazoid!

I have to use some statement which is not mine but it is quite funny and correct about Goa trance vs. Psy trance:

Goa Trance is psychedelic.

Psychedelic Trance is not.

Any opinions as to the top 3 (or maybe 5) TYPICAL representatives of Goa on the one hand and Psychedelic on the other???

There's psychedelic trance and then there is trance

goa for example is psychedelic, so it's psychedelic trance, some might refer to it as old school psytrance

full on for example is trance, but it's not psychedelic, therefore it is not psytrance

so.. what ever sounds psychedelic and has that 4x4 stuff going on could pretty well be called psytrance

what doesn't sound psychedelic but has that trancey stuff going on is just trance..           "The dinosaurs became extinct because they didn't have a space program."

okay, I didn't get what you were looking for in the first place. So, since you want to know "what people around the world think", here's my personal 2 cents :

For me Goa Trance was originally made specifically for the parties on the Goan beaches in early 90's. This music had to have the weirdest sound effects and had to lead the dancers to the trance. It wasn't ment to be commercialized ASAIK.

Then by 1993, Youth, enthralled by the Goa Spirit, released the first "Goa comp" (Project II Trance) on his label Dragonfly.

As for the different styles (full-on, minimal, techtrance, morning, dark...), some will say that they were forged for marketing purposes. Maybe it's a bit far-fetched.

Basically, as long as I can hear weird "psychedelic" sounds, a monstruous bass line and some spacey samples, it's what I like, whether you call it Goa Trance or Psy Trance or anything else.

So two Top 3 don't make sense from my viewpoint.

J.
