big respect for being the pioneer etc....
@ apocalypse - he does play dark tunes....so i'm not sure abt his fluffy side.
his mixing is not great....and frankly sometimes i do think he is over-rated. I think that stems out of the respect people have for him for being one of the first.....that respect when it ripples to a larger mass...ends up as hype!
my two cents. |

the mixing is not that important...
The main thing is MUSiC, not pitching...
and GoaGil is on top in music... he is playing really the best hard psychedelic music |

I respect Gil's history and his intention..but his taste in music has gone to from full-on psychdelic ....to grim and awful over recent years....
as for the 'maigical' atmosphere of his partys in recent years...I've seen him play all night twice (Hilltop and Disco Valley) The whole scene struck me as a haunted house of dealers, drunk tourists, sketchy and chillumed-out westerners...not a whole lot of dancing or vibes....
Goa must have better a better and more magical place before the Russian drug mafia/dark music mafia ruled the place liked gangsters....
if the "Spirit of Goa"..the magical beach side paradise .... has turned into a nightmare soundtrack of Parasense and Xenomorph...then I'm personally not into it anymore....

Goa Gil has continously played the most cutting edge REAL PSYCHEDELIC music throughout his career. every party he plays is like a journey through insanity and back, sober or high, and that is why i'll continue to go to his parties and dance like a maniac for hours and hours on end...
just like anything else, no one is forcing you to like it, if you don't like it don't go and why waste your energy complaining about it? |

excuse me?! you could have super music but if you mix it together badly its a nightmare.
and also music is good or bad according to people's different tastes.... but good mixing and bad mixing is pretty much universal... So I would say mixing is very important.
Dj's like Gill mix out of the track at the very end... so their mixes are very short long etc... (I call this 'the music has controle over the DJ') for your information there are DJs who mix entire tracks together... or mix from one track to another over 3 minutes, this is where the we have 'controle over the music'
Gill might have good music (which I dont agree with) and good track selection, but he couldnt do a 3 minute mix even if he wanted to..... specially if he is still doing his DAT machine thing....
I know him pretty well and have many times been in the dj booth when he is playing and have seen what he does... basically he fades from one track to another when there is no beat.... he'll do it for hours and hours, and days and days too.. (for those of you who have been to his 3-day parties)
He was doing this style of mixing when he started playing in Goa... I know this because my dad would play with him at some of those parties (they were very different then)... in those days they had to use walk-man like tape decks and DAT players... so Gill got used to it and stuck to his methods even when CDJ's etc.. started being used...
my opinion of Gill... I have much respect and killer memories... but I dont like his music anymore, still have a good time at his parties though... but havnt been to one of his for a couple of years.

Yes, Gil stuck to the technical method that he's been using for a long time. But he's been always focusing on collecting music really up to date, for introducing talents whos opening new views of psychedelic music with their work. For those people, whos not prefering this style of trance music, of course it's not a big deal. For me it is.
I do prefer so much, when a dj is mixing nicely, but when Gil brings us the freshest psychedelic music through a big and amazing journey, I don't care if his beatmixing or not.
Everybody has the possibility to approve of his work or not, or to accept his DAT playing or not, and also to have an opinion of him. But when someone speaking about him with such a bad words and disrespectful way as some people do in this forum (of course not you Jehan), it always makes me thinking: what happened with this scene? |

I guess people can say whatever they want though... |

I didn't wrote that mixing is not important. There's a little word: THAT...
And it's no offence but mixing two entire trex together... I think it's okay sometimes in progressive and psytech but in real psycehedelic music... now that's a nightmare!
And I hate when a Dj pulls down a track after 3 minutes, that's not enough time for me to get known of the track, to feel it in it's origin, to get into real trance.
This is my opinion... maybe I'm not right.... |

in a good 3 minute mix the dj wouldnt 'pull down a track after 3 minutes' they would just add sounds from another track to add to the first track... (and slightly adjust the first track so that your levels etc stay the same) and then go from there...
but yes, mixing two tracks together can be dangerous if its not done smoothly.
a good mix would take you to a point where you cant recognize two different tracks... that the mix just creates a track of its own.... and eventually, or even suddenly, you're in another track
do you see how this method allows you to turn 2 tracks into 3 tracks....
-the first track clean
-the mix of the first and second track,
-and the second track clean...
and yet at the same time all these three tracks merge into one unique track of its own.... |

no no... dont be sorry... I'm sorry too... if I sounded arrogant (someone accused me of being arrogant.... maybe its true... sometimes I get pretty excited about what I think about something and it comes across as pushy)
all is good. |

I heard and saw Goa Gil on small party at forest in Sauerland(i think). He played for over one day. And it was one of the best parties i ever were
For me he is the best DJ i ever heard.
I like his way of playing one song and then then the next song and so on. Without changing the tracks and playing around.
And his and Arianes music, the Nommos is the style i love to hear on party. It is unbelievable good and psychedelic, fast and full on.
Goa Gil is a Full On DJ. And i hope i can listen to him some more times

what goa gil is trying to achieve is generally really different from what people go to the gatherings for. so I think its normal that his long sets alienate and bore lots of people. lots of us have forgotten what a psychedelic experience as a ritual is. he is one of the few who still is djing to make us remember. you make like the idea or not, but I think whichever way, we must respect the gil.
