I think they will meet and just keep babbling without listening to each other. They are both so down their own roads to bother considering another opinion.
Would be fun to get them together sometime though...neat idea!

I dont know about raja but i have a strong anti-gil attitude and its not that i dont think he can mix, or my dislike of his music
More on that in a second
As for his mixing ive seen it steadly improve over the last 6 years (i see him more than id care to being from SF), and he does admittadly know his mixing is bad and has made an attempt to work on it....so i give him points on that
Musically i dont care for what he plays, but he has always played the harder stuff out there, and plays much of underground artitsts no one else will. In many cases he is giving new artsts their first break at getting their music to a wider audience, and he does for some unspeakable reason be able to tap into the minds of his audience and play what they want to hear (being if what you want to hear is 150bpm's of chains being dragged across concrete, and most in his crowds eat it up)
What makes me against him is
A) " The Cult of Gil" The amount of hero-worship that surrounds this man is amazing. Just watch him sometime smoke a spliff , and watch the amount of people that gather around him just hoping to get a puff off of that divine morsel as if it were a holy sacrament. He has done alot, but he is just a man and not worthy of this divinity that is reaped upon him
B) Hes an asshole. I on multiple occasions have had unpleasant run-ins with him, even in my own home. Unless you have music he wants, can book him or otherwise have something he is interested in, he has no interest in common decency of being civil
and thus is a fake ( i think fraud may be too strong a word) as he does not enage in behavior fitting "the enlightened being" he purports to be
i suppose in the end these are all personal views and opinions of a man, whom many probably have wonderful things to say about. Maybe our energies simply dont mesh, maybe those eagerly awaiting his leavings do so with the knowledge of something greater, who knows...

I can not but think that to call someone who Beatmix (dj tricks as rich call it) a person who have a big ego is not only a very stupid comment but also quite insulting to those DJ's who do a great job Beatmixing

(Late reply here but,) I obviously didn't mean to diss all mixing, but I am saying in my opinion too many mixing tricks can interrupt the flow, as I hear it, as much as any trainwreck. I do like hearing great mixing as much as anybody, but not at the expense of the flow of the music.

I have to agree with pretty much everything that Krell has said on this thread.
In terms of technique both are absolutely terrible DJs. Neither can beatmatch or eq tracks to the standard that i think is expected at the sort of parties they play at (i.e minimum 1000 ppl).
In terms of music i think each plays absolute dog poo migraine music (new sub-genre i discovered), but hey, thats just my personal opinion. Im sure for the ppl that like dark psytrance and cheesy full on its the perfect music.
Both have done a lot for the trance scene/culture...but so have countless other dj's, artists, labels, party promoters etc. They're not the only ones.
in the end, it comes down to the music. the scene started with music, and that how it should stay...about the MUSIC!

I created an account in this forum just to reply to this thread
I dont know much about the history of psytrance, and ive only been into it a few years...but Id go with Raja Ram because I hate the shit that Goa Gil plays today...i hate raja ram's stuff too but its closer to what i do like than gil's stuff
This "dark psy" ...its sometimes nice but most of the time its devoid of a deeper meaning ....Goa Gil's Techno Spiritual Trance cd back in 96 was so much better, the melodic Goa - its what i define the genre with...Astral Projection is the master at this sound
I hate most modern psy...rarely find a release thats more than just a combination of random noises
I dont understand how anyone could pick this modern sound, be it full on or dark psy, over the melodic Goa sound...someone clue me in as to why real Goa collapsed? |

er... we all got older and moved on... and the Russians invaded Goa...
Some nice new school goa sounds about if you look hard enough. Suntrip Records are doing a good job keeping the old Goa spirit alive |

Gil, because he plays what I love to listen to.
And when we're talking about mixing skills - I don't really care if he can or can't mix, the only thing that matters is that the music is playing and people are stomping.
...and tell me another DJ that can last as long as him?
P.s. Don't know about Raja, but I wouldn't mind a Shpongle live.

im not being mean but since the first time i seen goa gil. i belive he only trips people out and takes them on a journey BECAUSE he plays so long its imposible not to trip out when the music is played 12 hours. i mean he is the pioneer, but i bet if SHIFT played for 12 hours it would be just as intense if not more , do you guys agree. basicaly im saying if you listen to any style of music for that long you cant stop yourself from tripping! |
