A question to all those people that refer to Goa Gil as the guru and grandfather of psy trance.

I am not here to give you information so that you can gossip them with your friends.
I am just trying to make you think (and search even) better if you really should call gurus and grandfathers of trance people for whom you dont really know any info about.
I suggest you make a visit to India or speak with people that live and been there for a long time now (not people that travel there after 2000-2001 just for a month for vacations and come back to Greece also as 'trance gurus' and 'masters'...) and then see for yourself what these people have to tell you about Goa Gil.....I am preety sure that some facts will amaze you and make you change your mind.

What kind of info detox? Come on now, lets drop this, everybody knows whats going on in the trance scene...we could start talking about alien project or dino psaras maybe...? Or Max....? Who cares man...All we should care about is the music, the vibes, the energy. Psy trance is not pop music so that we gossip about the x dj aor x artist. Thats bussiness for losers and tabloids.

Other Reality sorry but seeing people call the person who commercialised the parties in India the Guru and Grandfather of trance is at least funny.
I mean people think that Goa Gil is a trance guru,a baba,a vegeterian,a philosopher,a spiritual father and stuff like that but when you ask them what they know about him and his past they simply know nothing.If everyone who is in his fifties,has rasta like hair and plays 10 hours dj sets is a trance guru then my uncle is also the grandfather of trance...
Its not bad worshipping anyone but its good to have a reason to worship him.
I hope that you understand my words.

Possibly, Goa Gil is not an actual Guru of philosophy, or meditation. It is also wrong to worship anyone in particular, thus meaning a famous individual. BUT, Goa gil, in his own way, IS the modern trance guru. Sorry Detox, and i really don't know if your uncle has rastah, but Goa gil is not ANYONE. I don't care if he is vegeterian, and i don't give a sh*t if he claims to be a natural high and smokes tselemia like a sailor...All I care about, is that he is the only Dj who has preserved the Goa vibe within his trance sets. In a way, he is still one of the very very few people who have lived and evolved through the original trance theorem. And he makes a party just by himself, because he thinks (quite accurately) that the whole scene has been over-commercialised by a gang of computer freaks who make music within hours, just to impress some ignorant kids with a few tight kickdrums and stomping basslines. Ofcourse, thats my point of view, and i do not expect it to be aspiring or the only one. Still, it is a disgrace to mention all that has been mentioned in this thread for a man who is still standing, one of the last indeed, in front of the people and for the people. I have met him in person, and i have talked with him, and his words will always be in my mind, wandering and reminding me what this music is all about. Detox, you are the one where in another thread, you were backing up alien project, and said that it was wrong to say in public such words for an artist. Now, you again, say these words for Gil. Please try to reconsider some of your thoughts.

Oh and about making parties just by himself by playing 9 and 10 hours long dj sets.
Thats one of the ways with which he passes and preserves the 'Trance Guru' image to the audience,especially to the new kids in the scene.
I mean even when the Samothraki organisers invited him to their huge festival the guy rejected to play because he DEMANDED that he would play at least 8 hours dj set (just like he had done in the Cyberlight festival where just 20 people were dancing when he was playing while everyone else was having a headache).
This is the real trance spirit that your guru spreads around?.....
Oh and last but not least since when the music that Goa Gil plays in his sets (at least for the last three years) represents the Goa spirit and vibes? Toodaloo Motherfuckers!!!!! |

that's why he plays iron maiden and metallica in his sets... come on people, no dj is a "guru". even if there is someone you could call that way, i bet he would be unknown to the vast majority of the people!

GURU is very heavy word to use it for someone
and means a lot of things.I could say that guru is the spiritual head of a specific philosophy,idea,the one who give the slightest knowledge the light through the ignorance and the one who could release someone from his spiritual bondages his one footstep is from the cosmic place and the other at the spiritual he is the only one who could connect the awekened spirit with the cosmic life and those two be one and ready for liberation.Goa Gil kept the idea of the spiritual and ritual part of music he says that he is a techno shaman maybe he is, he plays trance from 1992 so everyone who started later must have a kind of respect for him but I dont think that we could use the word GURU because he might not represent
the all meaning of the word.Any way personally I like him when he smiles and he is inspiring me with the trance spirit... |

Well said, although he started earlier than that. Anyway, the word is respect, and many people tend to forget it. Detox, what Gil is playing NOW probably doesn't interest me musically. And when you say that "the rest were having a headache", it's quite possible because Gil's music isn't "beautiful". You can be lost within it, or be scared away, nothing else. As for the entrance fees, Gil wasn't the first one to introduce them. Gil made pure trance parties in Goa, AFTER the "clubification" of trance in Europe. And since the trance tourists were interested in going to Goa and have a dance-off vacation, Gil welcomed them with his sets there. No one had a clue of what music he was playing, and still some don't. Go on and ask the Israeli's who went to Goa from '92, or any others who did, what did they experience there. Or maybe even ask the one's in the late Solstice festival, where Gil played for 12 hrs with DAT's. Don't bother for Gil's appearances in UMATIC or the other shitholes in Greece. As for Raja Ram, although a nice person, I really can't understand how a man behind Shpongle and Infinity Project plays Iron Maiden and Metallica in his sets. Very sad indeed. And to end my part in this discussion, I don't listen to Goa Gil's music or sets. I listen to other stuff, the "unknown" as reffered to by Detox. Still, I respect the man. And I like him
