EVERY DJ does this. Everyone has their niche.
When you go to hear me play, you know your going to get a certain sound. When you go to hear Random, your going to hear a certain sound. When you go to hear Gil, your going to hear a certain sound (and Gil fans, dont try and say thats not true, cause we all know it is). Thats what makes a DJ a DJ and gives them their popularity.

That's funny because I was always of the belief that what makes a DJ a good DJ was the ability to adapt to the taste of whatever crowd he was playing to. My friend Josh who has a residency at the Holy Cow two nights a week (or maybe it's just one night now that he has another job) spins hip hop, electro, reggae, house, trance, top40, breakbeat, jungle...

(and he's not bad at it either)

Also I think it's bunk to try and define genres based on bpm.

If you take a track at 130 and speed the tempo up to 150 without changing anything else about the track, it is now magically in a different genre?

What makes a track progressive or fullon or dark is totally seperate from the BPM in my opinion.

thats really a misnomer. When you go to see Gil are you expecting to hear electro or booty house? NO your going to hear psy trance, and for the most part you are going to hear the harder end of the spectrum. Thats what hes known for. Likewise almost any other DJ, you friend included. Everyone has what the crowds no them for. Im sure your friend that plays everything under the sun, has one single thing hes recognized for. Also being a club DJ where you are expected to play commercial end stuff for general public, is entirely different than a underground DJ. You cant really compare the 2.

In addition to full on, i play acid techno, minimal, electro, progressive, downtempo, and if i felt like it i could drop a dub-step set or tribal house set.
But if Im playing a trance party, unless im opening and building it up from prog, im not going to drop any of those other things in my set.(well maybe a acid techno track depending on the crowd) It kills the dance floor. Its not what the crowd will want, or is there for. and thats more important than any self masturbatory exercise as a Dj

I guess once you have a name and everyone knows who you are you can think this way.

But if no-one knows who you are and you are not the reason that people are coming to the party, then you have to think differently.

well ... let me rephrase. I very much doubt Gil played traditional progressive. I would bet my lunch money he played something like minimal Para Halu, pitched down -10, and called it progressive.
or , and this is probably more accurate, he played some of his wifes music...
which Im not sure what one could really call it. Tribal is what i would guess.

After seeing Gil enough times over the years and having enough encounters with the man, to have a bitter taste in my mouth about him, honestly i have no personal desire to exhibit any imagination when it comes to him.

having attended the bday party I thought his prog finale sounded a bit like the new Flooting Grooves material

nope, havn't been to one in 7 years. But i frequently talk with a lot of people, both fans of his and those who aren't who have been much more recently.
As well as almost every org, outside of Nor Cal that has brought him to some location in the states.
I'm quite well versed in many of the Gil goings on, and know quite a bit about the back side of production at many of his shindigs.
I do think that he does enjoy playing SF more than anywhere else tho, and as such gives the crowds here, special treats he doesnt elsewhere

Out of the nine times I've seen him Only 1 time was I not realy into the music but I still had one of the best times of my life at that show. Gill brings trippers out of the woodworks, he helps create that festival energy in one night.
I have heared him play everything from the darkest of the scary dark to the smooth morning groovy stuff. Whatever is good that year in Psy is what you'll most likely hear.
Great new tunes and some you may never hear again in your life.
Thats why we love Goa Gill!

He changed my life and a lot of others I know...
I hope he still has many more years in him to continue his work.

No body is forcing anyone to like his style or even like him as a person but please give the man some RESPECT he has more than earned it.           \\\"Invoking the inner dancing buddha with future frequencies from beyond\\\" ~GyPsy

honestly... IMO, I dont think he has earned said respect.
Im not going to go on a bash Gil tirade. Ive attempted to keep my sentiments and comments as respectful as possible to not up set his fans and supporters...

but Gypsy, or anyone else, if you'd like to hear what ive got to say on the subject, id be more than happy to discuss it in private

I heard someone say they saw gil recently and he was using CDJs because his DATs got stolen (but then at this party he was using DAT again)

I've never met (that is, had a conversation with) Gil himself, but I honestly don't get a very good impression of him from hearing his followers, er, I mean fans talk about him. I reserve my judgement until I actually talk to him face to face though

GOA GIL sucks people. He can't mix, he isn't a nice person and he plays bad music. What's there to like?

Honestly I wish he would just do us all a favor and retire!!!

Everynight before I go to sleep I hope and pray Goa Gil NEVER PLAYS IN COLORADO!

I really didn't want to respond to this thread but I am just so sick of hearing about it!!!!!!!          www.horizonscolorado.com

You two were made for each other (11+Paradigm forever!).

11 youve seen him once right, when you came with us to OR to see him?
Ever talk to him in person?
Not sure how you can say these completely disrecpectful words about someone you dont even know...Its sad.
Are you just taking Paradigms encounters as your examples for judgement?

This man has put in more time than any of us.
Yes, he has earned his respect... The same respect that you should give to another Act that has been doing it for many years longer than you.
If you dont like his style or like his attitude thats fine but to say things like:
"GOA GIL sucks people. He can't mix, he isn't a nice person and he plays bad music. What's there to like?

Honestly I wish he would just do us all a favor and retire!!!

Everynight before I go to sleep I hope and pray Goa Gil NEVER PLAYS IN COLORADO!"

Or

"honestly... IMO, I dont think he has earned said respect."

Well makes you sound childish and ignorant.

Honestly...
You think you have earned more respect than Gil... Parigm?...
11?

This all seems 5th grade to me, the man has earned more respect than he is given. If your getting that old and rocking a decent set ALL night and then some, I'll fight for your respect also.

Dances off with an ear to ear smile bumping a Goa Gil set.

Of course this is all just my Opinion and we all know
how easy it is to get one of those.
