John has said to me a few times that he's wanted to get together and throw an event /with/ Gil instead of having competing events but obviously this is unacceptable for Gil since he is the only good DJ in the world and he won't have those other terrible DJs taint his pure awesome parties.

this is lacking in truth...

Also, since there were, "only one or two" real psy acts, please tell me which of these were "real" psy acts and which weren't:
Quasar
Chromatone
Olowanpi
Liam Shy
Wichdokta
Sunchild
Zul
You guys accuse Paradigm of "hate" and yet in my eyes you are the ones with a closed mind and cold heart.

chromotone and quasar and liam are local producers, the others are local dj's, and all are good and play from their heart....Liams performance is pure energy.

But i think its a terrible thing to split the scene like this.Especially given that the scene is not healthy at all these days. Throw Gil, but do it the following weekend. Tantra does NYE, has for years. Am i the biggest fan of their events? No, but its still a bullshit power play, that in the end only undermines the scene as whole.
Certain people have certain traditional dates locked up.
I can only imagine the sabre rattling that would come from the Gil heads if someone threw a large Full-On fest on memorial weekend.
Or, would you people condone another org throwing a show on Gemini weekend?
Some dates are sacred and locked up by certain people.
Its a respect thing, and honestly, very little of any of the organizers in the Bay Area have it. Its everybody for their own, with out any thought to the state of the bigger scene as a whole
|
|
well, maybe its time to put a an end to the "sf scene is dying" mantra...
I heard both parties were at maximum capacity, with both making money.
so, can we end this negative mantra and move on?
i imagine there is a lot we can do to make this decade better than the last...
whose in?

Right now IMO the only ones doing anything right are Jen and Leo, as they are making a serious effort to keep things underground and cater to the family vibe, but are also doing shows catering to the full spectrum of psy. Not just focusing on one style or another.
|
|
this is not true party people of san francisco
they are two of many... it seems team infinity with their sound system are poised to take us into a nice new decade.
Not to mention the goa gil party throwing collective, working on their 11th year of organizing...
and tantra with its sixth year? or party throwing.
And how weird street faire...
and love fest....
and somehow happy camp is entering its fourth year of production...
paradigm, time to move back you silly. |

and to say if the scene is so weak that it cant have two parties the same date. Well, really your just deluding yourself. Its never really been able to do that, even at its hey day.
And as for something else to strengthen it. Well the only way to do that is to bring in and welcome new blood, but well just read some of the above comments to see how well the established folks feel about that.
case and point
thank you
|
|
new blood? like true blood? too many vampire references these days....
but really, like we were noticing before, both parties on new years were huge successes....
I was at both.... so were many....
and new years rocked...
so...
what does that mean?
are you a cylon? |

did move back was sadly dissapointed by the state of things...
Only parties i enjoyed over the summer into winter honestly were my own, or Jen & Leo's. and one of Liam's Tantra events.
And as such am making motions to trance-plant myself again, to a new local which it seems is about to pop-off and seems to have a lot of energy reminiscent of old SF.
I am glad both events were at capacity, and both made money good for them.
Perhaps the tide is turning... this is good
however as always... someone needs to get a good solid, clean and comfortable venue, and keep it on limited use lock down.
That more than anything is what the damn scene needs most.
anyways, yes thread hijack... i admit it. Premeditated? No, but am i smiling? Yes!

| I know of a venue that the psy scene hasn't touched in years, which is gigantic, has very warm and intimate parties, and has only had one bust in its decade-long history.
Unfortunately we can't really throw a party there because the residents only like minimal |

hey Lawrence, theres this great party called OUTER REALMS this saturday in Oakland it has a perfectly well balanced lineup, something you'd probably really like. surprised i havent heard you say anything about or to support it...
if you've been sadly dissapointed heres a chance to not be since your craving for balance has yet to be met. havent touched base w/ ya in a while, you should come and enjoy the western world of mop because the only way things will pick up is if we Hype, Help and most importantly Go To all the events we possibly can that we are interested in other promoter's parties aren't always my cup of tea, but i love the people in the scene so much, and really appreciate the hard work so it brings me out almost every time no matter which kind of trance (psy trance mind you : ) it is. even if its a party thats all full on or only 160+ bpm starting at 8oclock lol and just cuz its not my fav approach all the time doesnt mean i dont completely respect and condone it. to each their own as long as we have enough trance parties to go around

Ok all you whiners, complainers, asshats etc... about the scene being dichotimized / dead / dying etc. (you suck for making me write this)
Here's how I know the scene is THRIVING...
I journeyed(sp?) to both events and venues and was there for multiple hours at each... and during which both said events were PACKED to the hilt full of people... sure there were different vibes whatever... but I enjoyed them... did I enjoy Gil more? sure but that's not the point. I loved what I saw / felt / smelled / heard @ Tantra too... very much so!
So from here on out - anyone saying the scene is dying is PULLING YOUR LEG (hehe).
I'm beginning to think this state of mind / cop out is a feeble attempt to piss off everyone else around them and/or the sensation of hearing themselves whine.
*snort*
*spork*
p.s. Gil has invited people to start djing for 24 hours at time. It's not like the idea is patented or anything. Just not enough hours in the day/night. And while I may not have shared the same stage with him; Once upon a time I did play in the chill dome @ a Gil in northern California for 3-4 hours. It was nice. Parachute dome and comfy pillows. Sauce.
p.p.s. then there was this other time we smoked a spliff together. good times.

| Not exactly practical to do unless artists from all over the world send you their music for free, pre-release.
I definitely think that the whole idea of 1-hour DJ slots is silly. If I were throwing a party it would go
Local tag-team/open decks until enough people show up
featured DJs and/or liveacts for as long as they want to play
back to local tag-team/open decks until all of the party people are gone or the venue kicks us out.
1-hour DJ timeslots originated from greedy promoters (not even within the psy scene) who wanted to put as many DJ names on their fliers as they could, and then because of that, DJs got used to playing 1 hour slots and now many of them aren't capable of playing for longer. |

honestly, some Dj's just don't like playing past a hour. Personally, i think a hour and a half is ideal. Its long enough to build a story, but not too long that the crowd may get over hearing a certain sound.
1 hour is too short, 2 hours is ok, but after that my A.D.D starts kicking in (one of the many reasons i don't do Gil)
Also bear in mind that 85% of DJ's and live acts suck and are talentless hacks who couldnt mix their way out of a paper bag. and or have no concept on reading and manipulating a dance floor. Most play for their own personal enjoyment and could care less if anybody is dancing or not.
Having sets 2 hours or less at least lets the direction of the party keep moving, instead of having some turd behind the decks for who knows how long.
Party goers are a fickle bunch, with not much patience. They will wait a hour or 2 for the music to get better if its not their cup of tea, but not much past it before they give up and move on.
But going back to the bread and butter of this thread hijack. While yes i will say it does seem that the scene is doing better... NYE is not a good yard stick of that.
Tantra was at Ginger Bread, which has its own built in crowd. It could be psy, or it could be a guy banging 2 garbage can lids together with a vo-coder. The place would still be packed.
Gil, has his built in fan base. and 58 Tehama is a small space. It max's at about 130.
and while the Bordello parties are doing quite well... lets not forget, that is a Dubstep venue (which is the most popular genre in the area right now), and as long as the promoters put in a dubstep room (which is a very intelligent move btw), they are pretty much guaranteed decent numbers.
Im not trying to rain on everyones parade, and maybe 2010 is going to see everything turn around, but really... almost every party i went to over the summer barely broke 150, if that. To be doing good and say the scene has bounced back i think most shows need to be hitting the 200 mark almost every time, unless it a show that is smaller by design

Sounds like west Oakland but uh I dont see the bay area trance scene being able to fill it without bringing in the dubstep crowd and to be honest I would rather trance be mixed with a room of techno than dubstep. |
