Having been a musician all his life and then doing intense Yogic practices with Gurus in the Himalayas he tried to unite the two, (Music and Yoga), into One Spirit befitting this Age. I find it funny that this 'Trance Dance Experience' is through music that uses horror samples, chainsaw noises, 'scary' effects etc...
Instead of setting off a chain reaction in Consciousness, it is more than likely that people on acid will be set off on chain reaction towards paranoia and even temporary insanity! I can see how weaker (more insecure) people would indeed get extremely pranged listening to his stuff. Don't get me wrong I like his ideas, just don't dig his methods. I definately prefer those older Gil compilations on cassettes! maybe someone knows why he has shifted to the darker side? The change was a bit too abrupt to just be natural |

When i had the opportunity to interview him i brought up a similar issue and i think the answer is not difficult. Gil has always been looking for the evolution of psychedelia, the music is just a tool for psychedelic experiences. Could you see him spinning morning full on? Electro-tekno perhaps? Let's get serious, what other road was he going to take, house?
People are still complaining, this dark noise is not music, i want my melodic leads, etc, etc... at this stage in the evolution of psychedelic trance, we're talking about accompaniment for psychedelic experiences. It is custom-designed and tested for this purpose, not for madonna to make a rmx. Some people would rather go with IDM, or psy chill or progressive in their voyages, i have done so many times as well and enjoy them equally... sometimes, is simply about having a good brain-rape... and like rollercoasters the ride is not designed for everyone. This does not excuse musical clumsiness... there can be both, extremeley twisted sounds and musical ideas. I guess the point is not to generalize...

Well, by simply saying morning full-on, you have made the same mistake of generalisation. Take Silicon Sound for instance; his music in my opinion is lighter in terms of melodies, but still very much psychedelic. I am not saying all dark psy is terrible (I do enjoy Psykovski ALOT for instance). But, there is nothing 'musical' about the majority of darker psy. At the end of the day this is all about music. This trance dance experience can very much take place with any type of trance, as long as it is psychedelic. |

brb a wide group people call the 'fluffy' type of full on, morning, i think we can agree with that. Why, when, for what? is not up to me to decide and explain, it's a simply a convention, much like 'progresive minimal". Some people feel artists like... electrosun are very psychedelic, i'm not going to argue that with them. Psychedelic music is an internalized individual process, is whatever works for you. i'm not going argue here why more agressive music is not more melodic... why? i don't know, but electrypnose springs to mind right about now. For you it is all about 'music' you say, for me it is all about energy...
going back to topic, the goa trance purists beleive MFG, Eat Static and Pledians are THE defacto musical genre, and it dosen't get anymore psychedelic for them, and then wonder why Gil changed his style. Goa trance is simply another sub-genre, just like latin house and electro-prog, etc, etc... what do you think Gil was playing before goa trance came around? from kraftwerk to Industrial Music. Front Line Assembly, et al. for us that enjoyed timeles tracks like Body Count, Lethal Compund or Bloodsport, this evolutionary branching of psy trance seems only natural and long overdue

haha..u dont really understand music ..do u ??
thing is that by using those samples , noises and effects that u mentioned
makes it that much easier for the psychedelic experience to be in its natural state coz at the end of the day v live in a world which has all these elements ...so its that much more in it .....
and the whole idea of a
psychedelic state of mind is of a mental state characterized by intense and distorted perceptions and hallucinations and feelings of euphoria , happiness or sometimes despair; "a psychedelic experience"
n by the way GIL'S music has top quality soundscapes and equally good production ...in a way u mean to say that all those artists dont knw what they r doin ?? according to u thousands n thousands of ppl who go for every GOA-GIL gathering r stupid ..!!

I think you both need a break.
In regards to music, its all down to taste.
The most likely explanation is that Goa Gil digs the dark psy stuff the most these day.
Some of the tracks he used to spin were produced by at least one of the same people who would go on to be a Parvati Rec label DJ.
And to be true, a lot of the tracks in his old charts where what the Parvati guys would also spin at the outdoor events here locally.
So for me it doesnt come as a surprise that Goa Gil choose that path also.
Dark Psy Trance came into being with inspirations from Psychedelic Trance such as Ect, Orichalum & The Deviant, Psychopod and so forth in combination with Dark Psy Tech-Trance like The Delta, Paps, Authentik and so forth.
Merge the 2 - PSYCHEDELIC and DARK, then you get Dark Psy - Fast, furious and very potent on the dancefloor.
That some people do not like it, nor understand it - Well, sad for them, because there is so much joy and happiness to be found in that music.
That they, for whatever reason, want to turn it into their own crusade of right & wrong thats their choice; however I think it would be better if they instead tried to respect other peoples taste, and perhaps realize they are not a part of the same scene anymore and let it rest at that.
How can diabolic & dark music be joyfull ? The answer is simple, ITS MUSIC!
Its like, how can a scary movie be joyfull ? ITS EXCITING.
All of us dont want to watch Legally Blonde, Clueless, Roadtrip, Bodyguard or whatever fluffy chick movie other people do all the time either. Happy ending guarenteed.
Some of us want to watch Bowling for Columbine, Fahrenheit 911, War documentaries, Schindlers List and so forth. Life isnt pink, its multicolored - And we want our psychedelic experiences to be that way also, without having "positive" vibes spoon fed to us all the time.
I like IT ALL - Cheesy Infected Mushroom, and mean ass Savage Scream!
What I myself do not understand is why Goa Gil would play that music, and ONLY that style - For me, the only thing that is weird is that I cant spot his old school progression anymore...
Besides that he actually likes Dark Psy, which Im sure he does.
He is perhaps not able to be up2date with all these different subgenres only using DAT tapes.
So, he has a focus in ONE genre ONE path, with material he gets from his usual sources (who of course all have choosen the "killer tracks").
I dont know how many full on artists out there copy their tracks to DAT and send them to Goa Gil - Im guessing, not a lot.
When you see Goa Gils charts turn really dark its around December 2002, during the summer of 2002 he finally moves away from regular Full On and into dark stuff.
However, the change already starts May 2002, but he still has regular Full On like Absolum & Polaris in his chart there. (Btw, this means it was not all of a sudden, but more of a transition over 1 - 2 years).
December 2001 is all normal Full On.
July 2001 he even has a Skazi track there:-)
Somehow his change in style coincides with Downloads becoming a lot more common (around 2001/2002 European countries "gear up" into ADSL connections etc), and "the explosion of labels" also occours from then onwards.
At least at some point, technology impacts Goa Gil - We know he uses DATs to spin, which doesnt make sense if he gets the music on CD.
This leads me to conclude that he uses DAT only, and if so, covering ALL the musical spectrum is nowadays not possible.

and hes no great dj either .. just regular dark psy .. his project , the nommos .. not that great either ..
