I am still a noob in the area but in my experience they are relatively simple, like two saw osc with a lowpass filter and lots of cutoff filter mods.
If you have Cubase, load Monologue and the acid bass preset and experiment around.
Generally, the goa sound is often associated with the TB303 synth that had a very characteristic sound but in my opinion is a bit overrated today when you can emulate it with virtually any subtractable vsti synth.

Use Trilian, find a nice saw waveform, tweak the envelopes until they are nice and tight and make sure the midi note is nice and short as well, then use eq. Make sure your kick fits together with the bass. EQ that as well. Then compress and enjoy Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

with goa bassline you can do what ever you want as long as it drive the beat imo, really no rules, it s not really formated like full on
using a synth wihtout retrigering osc phase can lead to great goa bassline when finding sweet spots between the synth settings and midi line
Yeas i like that kinda randomness in goa basslines, i read somewhere sometimes 2 basslines were used in counterpoint kinda like
K---K---K
-B-B-BB-
--b-----b
something like this
i'm trying to make those bassline that almost seem arpegiated leads and really fat, its not easy

@Nomad Moon, used to try to get this random feel too but didn't segregate basslines. Just wrote a 2 bar melody and then dragged it down 2 octaves and readjusted envelope parameters to make it a bassline sound.

compared to full on you can use higher notes so using 2 osc with one a octave lower can be a good idea sometimes depending of the sound you are after, the kick / bassline balance..(you can try a mix of a square and a saw )
if you want it almsot cheesy use a chorus on the mids by splitting the bass in 2 bands , you can experiment with other fxs don't be afraid to use them but try to not mess the low end reason why spilitng the bass in bands help. the modulation of the fx get the bassline more organic, but depends what sound you are after..

The sound design has been pretty much covered, what I want to suggest is to include semitones in your bassline riff.

the ones i really like are the one used a lot in pre goa trance , like this one at the begining of the tune...classic bassline almost cheesy but still work..
it s not best example but was enjoying listening the tune.. made us fly so high back in the days

^ this!
most artists had (or have, after all there's still a lot of new goa around) distinctive basslines, varying greatly from artist to artist or from track to track.
in goa you'll have everything from tb303-style bass over dual-osc-sh101-style over gated detuned saws over almost inaudible sinewaves to more or less fullon style saws (or even squares).
the patterns are similarly dissimilar to each another. you find simple offbeat bass (sometimes with long attack), kbbb, anything in between (usually with longer varied patterns), or melodies that could be another lead if they were a few octaves higher.
one thing that's quite typical (but not universal) in goa however is that the basslines take up a lot less space in the mix. often the real lows are left to the kick while the low mids are left for the melodic layers.

surely sounds a lot like phrygian or maybe rather spanish gypsy scale to me. (but i'm too tired to check right now ;-) )

maybe give a try to the new tal juno emulation, haven't used it yet but i guess you can get good goa bassline with this without much work.
