Go and find some magic: Goa 2012
Goa seems to be back as a great place to party if this year’s season is anything to judge by. I didn’t get there until March, but with the emergence of a new wealthy Indian middle-class looking for thrills and spills to spend their money on, the scene now
lasts from October until May. There’s a big increase in international visitors from everywhere and still in April four planes worth of Russians weekly coming in for fun in the sun. With temperatures in March / April apparently still at minus 20 degrees in Moscow I reckonit’s a pretty easy choice as to where to be. There also seemed to be far less muscled guys in sportswear around and more of a hippy ‘family’ feel to the
Russian crowd.
With big parties such as that at Blue Waves for Boom with 2,000 people crammed into every space and packed parties around New Year when prices go crazy, plus the usual scene influx in mid January, February and March when it’s not ridiculously busy, the hippy, trippy Bermuda triangle is very much alive and pulsing with energy.
For myself and anyone getting there t the end of February, Goa took a while o get going. Then national elections were taking place, meaning the imposition of a ban on the sale of alcohol after 10pm or throughout election days, which generally means no parties.
There were a couple of word-ofmouth parties at the new Our Shack Bar on Little Vagator, Spaghetti Beach run by Isaiah, which has serious potential for next year. But no alcohol sales mean no money to pay the Police, so that parties can carry on into the night. Chapora was deserted and after 10pm, there were many people driving around
looking for something to do. By the time
of the first big party after the elections,
people were ready to explode. A great line-up which saw Aphid Moon and then Dickster raise the energy up to full power at Shiva Valley – always on the Tuesday night – was amazing and set the tone for the rest of the late season. UV Bar in Anjuna where I had the pleasure to play quite a few sets has really developed now and had parties on all
the time, many of them going right through to the next morning, which was almost unheard of just two years ago.
Next to it a new venue Hippies, slotted
in some memorable parties every now and then on the beach and Curlies with its Thursday night party has got more and more popular with the Indian crowd in particular. Hilltop in Vagator even though it finishes early cleaned up with a great Parvati night on its regular Sunday night slot. 9Bar came back into its own towards the end of the season
and there was an especially good party for the owner’s birthday at West End Club in Siolim which always goes on through the night.
Add to that Anjuna’s famous flea market, great beaches, cheap food and beer and you can see why Goa once again is brimming with potential. A home away from home for some, especially my good Russian friends with Brits, Germans, Italians, Danes, Israelis, Iranians and even a Welshman adding to the international flavour.
So Goa is buzzing once again and long may that continue.
