After months a busy festival summer and a few months in the lab to put the finishing touches on our next CD compilation, Open Records is back and better than ever in 2010 with a new EP from some of Melbourne finest techno and house producers.

First There Was Sound is a return to the source for Gavin Martin, who released the first music from both his GMJ and Fulcrum monikers with Open Records in our early days.

And while we were first to recognise the production talents of this veteran Australian DJ, the world has since taken full notice with releases on some of the biggest labels in the business including Baroque, Vapour, System, Jetlag, KULT, BUS, Subsonic and more.

The original GMJ mix of First There Was Sound is Gavin at his chunky techno best, with a fat and funky bassline, sharp percussion and a slowly modulating lead, which undulates throughout the track until the final moments. In contrast, Fulcrum Daydream Mix is a lazy deep house number, still with the same strong bass elements but a more stripped back and lush atmospheric approach.

Completing the release are remixes from two more of Melbourne most exciting artists in the shape of Jamie Stevens and Continuum.

Jamie Stevens, known to many as one of the men behind dual ARIA Award-winning live act Infusion and cutting edge label Dieb Audio, is one of Australian dance music true luminaries. His remix is nothing short of a revelation, an epic peak time techno monster designed to destroy any dancefloor that is already getting big reactions from some of the top artists around the globe including Hernan Cattaneo, John Digweed, Dave Seaman, Kasey Taylor, Criss Source, Solead and more.

Continuum take an entirely different yet no less compelling interpretation, favouring a deep and twisted tech route, building on the original track themes but injecting it with a healthy injection of wonk to keep you on your toes. The Mirams brothers can do no wrong at the moment and their wicked mix rounds out a killer opening to 2010 for your favourite Australian underground dance imprint.
