Have you ever reached that point where you know that music is for you, that it is all you've ever wanted to be involved in, you've found a style you enjoy and want to be a part of it.. but after a long time you still aren't hitting those cretive peaks you know you can achieve, you want to just give up?
I'm doing well, I've got my first upcoming release, I've learned so much I can barely remember all of it.. but a part of me feels like a fraud, that its just luck and not skill.
I still can't make certain sounds, I still guess a lot at EQ and various other fundamental elements to production and sometimes I take days to produce only a few extra seconds of sound in a track.
I've advanced more than I can measure since I started, but from here on the struggle to improve is SO uphill I don't know if I can do it. Do I sound like an asshole complaining? It's a hobby, nothing more.. but I WANT to be better than I am and I don't know if its worth it.
Sometimes I forget I'm enjoying my hobby and spend a lot of time being frustrated by lack of moving forward.
Does anyone else get this?!!!!! |

"Sometimes I forget I'm enjoying my hobby and spend a lot of time being frustrated by lack of moving forward"
You described exactly what i've been feeling the last two weeks., i have developed and learned a lot(mostly by myself) but the more i learn the more complex i want my stuff to sound. Lately i sit in front of cubase just beacuse " i have to do it" and music is not something " i have to" like if it was a job i hated, but i really want to move forward, finish up a good track and keep on, but in my case that has been stucked for a couple of weeks is really frustrating.
But i think those are just moments in life, things cannot happen so good or so bad always, so i try to learn or take some advantages.

I started the piano over 10 years ago. I know I can progress past what I'm learning curently, but I can barely bring myself to sit at the keyboard. As soon as I sit down, I'm hooked... hours fly by and I really achieve progress, but it'ts the initial sitting down and starting I hate.
Total opposite of Cubase, I start daily, but progress is slow and painful, despite my desire to want to do it.
My brain is totally baffling to me... |

yes indeed has happened to me , even worse, thinking im making total shit and stare at the cubase gui like and idiot.
its a phase... just think about it like this
my advice is:
get away from the daw, or cpu or studio or wateva
travel, visit places inspiring, spiritually enhancing, specially if that involves being in silence, listen to ur thoughts. fortunately here in mexico where i live there are places where i can recharge, like palenke, the oaxaca or carribean beaches or the desert over in sonora.
when u return ull be full of new emotions and thoughts ull just spit it out.... no more blocking!
im sure there are places u can visit and be in silence with nature and forget about techie stuff!!

it's a phase!
you'll improve!
whatever you do, you'll get better at it with experience...
life is a long twisted road, but you only got one to ride

When I started to feel that way I realised that I was actually starting to lose my enthusiasm for psy trance.
My solution was to leave that genre for a time and discover new music and become inspired by it. It was amazing to sit down at the computer, open up Cubase and start something completely different. I felt a new freedom to experiment and let inspiration/creativity flow without getting bogged down by technical aspects like EQ, Dynamics etc. that psy trance relies alot on.
I think producing one genre all the time can stifle your creativity and will tend to lead to a feeling of frustration. After a break I returned to psy with fresher ears and a new found enthusiasm. Who cares if something is compressed or EQ'd perfectly! |

tomos, just out of curiosity: are you studying at a university or something alike, or do you have a job where you're heavily under 'performance pressure' (in the sense of learning and improving, like in e.g. research)?

Tomos, there's a really nice thread on Psy-Forum about encouragement. Its called 'The encouragement thread' whihc was started by OTT. Really nice stuff in there. Maybe it will help you.
There is absolutely no point in giving up man. Why would you want to give up something you love???? Like everything else, you will have ups and downs. Just have to work through the difficult times.
Good Luck!!!
Rather than feeling that you're about to have the rug pulled from under you, let me teach you how to dance on a flying carpet |

Whenever I feel that way, I start working on getting a live-gig!
After each gig, I seem to get new confidence in my music which eventually seems to boost my creativity... at least this works for me

Well, to be honest.
I have NEVER finished a track!!!!!!!!!!!
I've been trying to make music for nearly 5 years, and since 6 months I've been struggling with Psytrance.
Usually I don't do more than just fiddle around with a kick/bass some percussion and small lead parts.
How embarrasing! |

Hi tomos,
interesting topic
i can totally relate to the frustration u face... for MOST of us here, producing music is a hobby... Learning anything by yourself is hard work, and if you have ever wondered 'is this really worth it', means your trying hard and kudos to you for that...
I read this book, and there was this chapter abt people who set out to do something and then totally failed time and time again, but persistance paid of and they finally achieved what they set out to do... examples (thomas edison, the light bulb, henry ford, the motorcar for everyone)
We all want to get better at what we do, its evolution... i find that to overcome certain frustrations with producing music anyways, the best thing to do is to take some time off... listen to other styles of music, read, play with your dogs, spend time out of the trance world... and then come back to it..... if your still feeling like your hitting a 'brickwall' (scuze the pun!!) spend time making presets.. listening to samples... or read ways to get past the hurdle your on....
best of luck
theres many like you around, dont give up just yet...
