Quote from 'Tom Cosm' on the same topic in another forum:

The main point I guess, is that giving all my music away for free makes me feel richer than any money could bring in. The looks on peoples faces when they get free CDs, the strange emails in the middle of the night from some guy in nigeria rocking out with his mates, and being able to data mine the stats and follow the trend of how word of mouth is spreading about my music is something I would never exchange for any amount.

i'm completely against royalty organizations, since money is the opposite of freedom.

and such organizations became somewhat useless - since the internet.
they act local, but what if somebody in Russia or China illegally sells your tracks?

psytrance is a universal language used to express the freedom of mind
... and if you're good enough: the people will definitely support you.

we do have some so called "artists" here in Germany,
who do make a lot more money with copyright
infringement lawsuits, than with CD sales.

so my question: you wanna play for the people, or you rather wanna sue them?

random fact: if you would open a pub here in germany and would only play isra sound there ...
you still would have to pay for your monthly royalty fee(GEMA), even if NO single cent (klum) goes to Israel - like it should be.

these royalty organizations only do make sense for mainstream and localized (folk) music ...
but psytrance is global!

unless there won't be an institution that defends artist's rights on their work 24/7 all around the globe - psytrance never will turn into a real commercial industry.

(please consider, that i'm not a friend of the given institutions and of the economic globalization).

the basic problem in my eyes is, that some people are just not honest enough to support the music that they seem to enjoy so much.

well ... i give a shit about money - respect is what counts.

An ironic little story about the stupidity and persistence of royalty organisations..
Several years ago, i co-owned a registered company in the netherlands, which was a project studio for electronic music.

The dutch royalty organisation kept sending us bills, which according to them was standard for any company, to pay for the royalty fees of playing radio on the workfloor.

It took quite some letters and phonecalls to explain that we didn't play any radio, because we didn't have a workfloor like an office or factory.
Quite the contrary, we were producing music there.. They then switched to sending us spam to join the organisation so we could profit from royalties generated by our songs being played within the netherlands.

We declined to join of course, on grounds that the style of music we created was global not just local and that these styles were very unlikely to be played on the radio or any other commercial circuit, yet they kept sending us reminders to join.

And one year later, another bill came for playing radio on the workfloor -__-"

In the way psytrance is produced and spread currently, royalty organisations are completely defunct.
They belong to the old ways and concepts which were used before the arrival of the internet and the huge spectrum of possibilities it has brought us.          www.myspace.com/gaiana_25

yeah - rigid structures like that can be a pain in the a** ...
have no understanding for conservative thinking and people
who want to keep everything "like it ever was".
