all of this velocity stuff makes sense...but when i make a clap for example on every other beat say beat 2 and 4 i want a ghost note in between so its like a slap back kind of but usuallyy the slap back not only is lower in velocity but i think another pitch too ..so how would you change the pitch of JUST the ghos notes....thanks guys           saii.rave.ca

just route velocity to pitch (certainly can do this in battery) or simply pick another sample that tickles your fancy.

hey guys,
i was reading alot of how you guys like to NOT use delay on snares and/or percussion to give it the "TAT para tat" cuz its more controllable. I have to very well agree with you guys on that but my question is as a newbie at this ghost note business....
how is it done in ableton live for example....or let me rephrase...whats the best way to do it in ableton live or the most effective way....
thanks guys

i do not use ableton for producing but i a can tell you the generell way i use it..

if there is a drum hit for example, i sometimes add some realy low velocity notes directly in front of it or behind it, very often shuffled, playing with timing manually in case of shifting them layed back a little bit for example can work wonders.
so... if i solo the element you can hear them, but in the overall track-sum they are hidden by layered element and its more that you feel them instead of hearing them. it can work on every element, even on kickdrums sometimes, and offcourse its often nice to use a little different sample, pitch, whatever for that.

but, since the years where going i use deadnotes not as much as i have done in the past, because production got a little bit cleaner and the elements are more focused on beeing exactly on point with minimal note editing. but its still a somehow advanced technic imo and is the key for decent drum-editing in some ways. imagine a real drumplayer, who tips with his hands on the djembe around of of the real loud notes, this effect makes the loop more living. and i always like to say "a dry drum-sound never comes alone".

today i like to use realy low volume and heavily filtered down/up/cutted and fast delays which are out of sync for such effects (i still prefer ohmboys for that)

my 2 cents.

hey saii,

i mainly use impulse of ableton, to route the vel - to pitch you'll find right to the start button the transpose button, below that you find a field for velocity - just raise the percentage and try around

same for pan/vol/stretch

thanks pilgrim, but its very random that percentage of pitch....is there a way to be more precise and always have the same pitch playing throughout the track?

just put more samples in impulse, transpose and trigger as you like
