Getting your hand played ideas down as MIDI

Some of the best stuff I do is when I'm making patches and just playing on the keyboard. I've made some very powerful melodies while playing keyboard.

I think that I play mostly on time, but I'm just curious if anybody has some good suggestions on getting from performance to recording.

When I'm just playing I doubt that all my parts lay down where I need them, there are parts I don't need and parts that may come in off of where they should.

My real question is actually: Do you guys have a way to make sure you can record your ideas in a usable format on time, or is it simply going through and doing tedious editing and rearranging of the MIDI notes? I feel that when I do this I loose a lot of what made the part I played great.

This question is hard to figure out how to ask, but I'm trying to get my live playing into my recordings as easily and as effective as possible.

If you have run into this problem and figured out how to make it work, please let me know, or if you just have suggestions anyway thats fine too.

Thanx,

yes, maybe I misunderstood you, but what's the problem just to push "record" button when you catch some nice melody?           http://soundcloud.com/aedem

The best thing with "jammin" is that you find grooves and time structures that change the move in a pleasant way and make paths through the track, which is awesome and gives more "groove" or speed or make it odd
but zoomin into the editor all the magic is lost by moving here and there midi parts
so i think the best way is to practice as more to be precise and dont have to make a lot of changes, and if the rythm or times have changed with the "new" part try to assimilate this groove and edit it in the editor
Anyway i think both are needed, good skills and editing
The last years editing is everywhere among pop-rock industry (drums, guitars, voice)
So it could not be missed by the king of editing (electronic music) hehe
best thing for melodies to flow is not to stick in bars but move on with jammin ofcourse
so both

I just play and then listen afterwards with a pen and paper, noting down the sections I like. Pick about 4 or 5 ideas and try them all out over the rest of the track.

No need to rush such things

What do you feel like you're losing when you have to rearrange the notes?

I haven't heard of anything that does it automatically.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

No I'm not looking for an automatic solution, I'm just looking for suggestions about getting from playing to recording and catching the good parts. I know it's sort of an odd question but I find myself losing good ideas in the recording and editing process.

I guess I'm just posting up some thoughts I had.

I appreciate all the feedback so far.

Ah, so you are playing some melodies that you like while not recording and want to replicate them while recording?

You could always just open a new project (or new channel in the project you're working on) in cubase, press record and play. If you create something good, just remember where it's at in the recording and use that.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

Some people just slow down the tempo on half or something and then play their riffs..never tried it actualy, but might work good.. i got some starting point basic melody and develop from this for some new suff.. or i make a nice bassline and use this to build up melodies...

Isn't there a feature in Cubase similar to "Capture Recording" from Logic?

If there is, that could help.          https://www.djjeto.com

I'm 99% sure there is.

you just need to have your sequencer playing while jamming. if you got something great then, you simply have to press the keycommand for capture recording and all what you played is there as a midiregion.

in logic at least, this option is just possible through a keycommand, an you have to configure it yourself before you can use it.           https://soundcloud.com/hazak

Do you mean a key command for rec.??
If so in Nuendo/Cubase is the " * " (times) on the numeric pad, that helps me alot too when jamming to dont use mouse, helps to remain the flow ..

in fl studio is a score logger, this tool reminds all what you jammed in your session. you can later dump the score in the pianoroll and search for the best parts.
