Windows from version 98 support dual graphics cards, you can have a graphics card running on an agp slot and the other running on a PCI slot. All you need to do is configure the display setting's in control panel. simply click the picture of the 2nd monitor and go down to the combo box and select which adapter will drive it! However you've got a 75% chance this will work. The best bet is to try several, you can get PCI gfx cards for less then £5 |

Thought I'd chime in here.. its been a while.
Windows (at least 2000 and XP which we're mostly using) can support I believe it is up to 12, that is twelve monitors. This does require that you run hardware that has the outs... one guy that works at ATI told me at a show that if you play something like M$ Flight sim, you can get the game to use all the displays as different views of the plane. Crazy.
Pretty much all the cards out there will do the job; we are in a 2D environment, that is not saying that the proggies we like are not graphic heavy. A good card with 64 to 128MB RAM should be fine. Heck we all know many artists that we admire that were scoring on way less.
The only thing I should say is that if you choose to use multiple cards, try to stick with the same manufacturer--at least on the chipset; nvidia with nvidia, ATI with ATI, Matrox with Matrox. Someone at Matrox once suggested this when I was looking into cards to give me three displays at work.
Over there, one of the outs is an AGP TNT2 (old skool) and the other is a Geforce 4 MX Twin View. The nice thing for music people is that the twin view is PCI, has two VGA outs, and treats both screens as one monitor. For my work I rely on the nView buttons to maximize to one window but since the audio programs span across both screens with essentially the same adapter, there is not as much lag going between the two screens.
Perhaps this is true of all the dual displays. To get real benchmarks, Please check out Tomshardware.com, and tell them Lazar sent ya. ;P
