Hi,
I am using cubase SX2 and making hihat rhythms by importing raw .wav in and sequencing straight out like that.
Only problem is my hats are sounding pretty robotic (even with a little delay etc.) I have used other little sequencing apps in the past that have a 'swing' setting which was great for getting a more natural sounding hihat loop but I'm looking for a way to do it in Cubase - I love all the control that Cubase gives me over the actual sound but I'd love to help it 'move' a little.
Hope that makes sense - I have run a search but short of reading the entire forum I havent found anything specifically on this subject, if I missed it pls forgive me. |

yea , double click on the wave , go inside And delete the silence before the the Hh hit go out bounce it ...
and if u want the sound to be more live just add a bit reverb to it .. |

well just go to the midi menu -> quantize setup -> and set your swing % for quantinzing. i cant remember if it also affects audio quantizing you should try it and see.
you could always do the swing manually. play with velocity and off quantizie timing...
if u dig deep enough u just might reach the sky...

you can use a few samples of hats to create the sense of more alive feeling.
use diferent velocities & pitches to add dynamics .
try short reverb or doubler to improve your sound. |

If you work in midi this becomes more easy...
then bounch to audio...
otherwise i think shachar has a good idea..
also to add, make 4 or more versions of the same hit, different velocity, and timeshift some hits some ms forward or backwards... just enough to make it swing... experiment!
though again i think midi is best for getting the right swing.. if you dont drum your self

you can automate the high end (12k+) of the high hats channel eq which will give a subtle dynamic feeling (like the place the HH was hit was different). just make sure your automation limits are from zero down.

I use a little reverb and EQ to "dampen" the sound of my snare and hat samples..as well as the "Smooth/Enhance" tool in Sony Acid..
Try some EQ and a LITTLE reverb though.. |

if you use a sampler you can try to route the velocity to the pitch ,sometimes it s sound great but focus on the groove with different velocity before.try some drive or something like christortion .you need to eq them so they stay clear with the open hat playing at the same time but it should be ok if you tune them before. |

Oh and another thing I do sometimes is sample them in FL and use a bit of the "swing" control in the step sequencer..export the loop and WHAPPAHSHAW!! |

use some chorus / flanger and delay / reverb on them... also EQ properly, to gain proper freqs and to eliminate unusable ones some freq's are causing very uncomfortable, unfittable sounds that are breaking the mix (like with all other instruments - proper EQ!), etc...
hope you make it like you want, regards

i dont like swing so much
there is better ways to "humanize" like shachar mentioned, like playing with levels/pitch/cutoffs.
i like digital cold in terms of snap. i like everything aligned and punchy.

postunder - i think it depends on the music it self..
i think you should play with as much as possible, though sometimes playing with too much just makes it ungroovy.. so find out what adds to the feeling....
everything you put your hands on is a way to humanize.. haha
