Released one EP with him
(Unknown Sources - Steamroller),

he was clear from the beginning that he would not pay me for it, I was ok with it, after all it was my first release... since then he has put several of those tracks on various compilations and I thank him for the advertising !

Nathan and I are cool, no worries there!

Many people have issues with spook because he makes it very clear that he does what he does (parties and label) for a living.

After dealing with others for a while, I have to say that Spook is at least honest about making money off of what he does... others try to say that they're in it for the love and then make a killing behind your back.

And while his parties definitely have a little bit of that club feel to them, they still have way better vibes than pretty much any other 18+ event I've attended.

I used to look down my nose at Geomagnetic because I was in love with the "real" psytrance scene, but I have to say after experiencing certain people in the "real" psytrance scene... I have never seen or heard Spook try to sabotage anyone, talk shit behind people's backs, or in general try to shit on anything anyone else does.

You may look down on Spook for depending on parties and music for survival, but he is making an honest living doing what he loves. Is that so bad?

I don't know many specifics of this label, though I do have friends who work with them and have good things to say.

It's fine and dandy to make your living off the label and throwing parties...but if it's true that they released an Electrypnose album without the consent of the artist that's...really really shitty.

Would like some clarification from geomagnetic on that one.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

I know nothing about the situation but my wild-ass-guess is that electrypnose signed over a bunch of his tracks to Geomagnetic with the unspoken assumption that they would all be released on compilations, and spook decided to slap them together on one cd and release it as an electrypnose album.

That actually looks like exactly what happened:

Quote:

Well,
2 years before the release date of this magnetic memoirs, I told spook that I would be okay to release an album with his label. He then also asked me a few tracks here and there for compilations. Album discussions didn't come up anymore... until... a friend passing by at home "hey man, I thought you were dead, there is a sort of memorial album of yours just out now"...
So, didn't know about it, didn't decide the artwork, didn't hear the mastering...
Eventually I missed the one mail that was telling me everything.
Well, I prefer to not mind too much about it, but hope he won't do this again.
The cover is horrible and I still didn't get a copy to hear it. I would have probably liked to fix some masters.

What are they guilty of? Electrypnose gave over the rights to his tracks, so they had the right to release them.

It's one thing to re-release tracks on multiple compilations.

It's another thing entirely to release a full Album's worth of material from one artist who is very well known without that artist's knowledge or approval of artwork, or mastering...or copies of the CD.

That's going a bit far in my noobish opinion.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

Vince aka Electrypnose sold me around 10 tracks over the course of a few years. Each time we made an arrangement and paid the tracks. All of them were licensed for future use as is all of our catalog. The deals were a one time flat fee payment. I mentioned to him (Electrypnose) that when we finally get around 10 tracks of his I would like to make an ANTHOLOGY album. Vince knew I was going to do this. He knew which tracks I had licensed. Since the tracks were already mastered (and he had copies of most of these masters and never told me hey this master needs more work...) I compiled the CD and released it. I offered to mail 50 to Vince and he said no.. he wanted a smaller pack.
So I mailed 15 to him and some how they never arived. (this happens sometimes) and I kept my reciept... =)

Vince was paid 100% for his album.
What can I say? he also was sent his CDs.
Many labels dont give an artist any say in the final result of album art etc... I personally LOVE the album cover and got many compliments on it... but art is subjective... some like some dont... sorry you didnt like the cover Vince... =)

so thats my side of the Electrypnose story...           Dr. Spook~

Sounds legit to me. Thanks for clearing this up! Always good to get the information direct and not through secondhand sources.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

If you have expectations of what a label will do with your music, you should probably have those expectations written down and signed.

Verbal agreements aren't worth the paper they're written on, and unspoken "agreements" are worth even less.

This makes sense. I asked vince about this when I saw him last and he made it sound like he just gave you tracks over a few years, then you released something without paying him at all.

While I don't like seeing the same track on multiple releases, the artist should know what they signed up for.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound
