technicalities aside , how much money are we talking about here anyway ?

Probably peanuts

Which is something to think about when releasing your music. Unless its a label you really wanted to get your music on, doing it for free is best, especially when there is no money to be made.

Peace out.

I'll re-phrase as I just re-read my post. Unless you want to get on a label that you really want, releasing your music for free through various ways (for example through Ektoplazm), is the way to go...its good karma, imo.

Peace out.

^ Also, releasing on a legitimate free site like Ektoplazm is way more respectable of your work than releasing a CD on a label and having it slutted around the illegal sites and tossed around like the disposable music a lot of psytrance has become.

Agreed but sadly it give zero bookings to release music for free (except for a very few lucky artists). The organizers look at us like 2nd rate artists.

The only way today to get bookings is to release with labels that have a big name in this scene. It does not matter if the music is good or not. All that matters is the label name. This is a seal of approval to the organizers and they'll start booking you.

In one post I seem to be advocating selling your label issued CDs at parties and in another post advocating giving it away on Ektoplazm. I clearly have no idea or opinion which is better!
Both have drawbacks and positives and you obviously can't do both.

As for the topic. As you keep saying Kris, there needs to be a step up in professionalism in this scene. Simple as that. No email chat contracts. Attach a legal contract to the email, have it read (carefully), sign it, print a hard copy for yourself and send it back. What's so difficult?

Exactly Rich.

And the whole point with an agreement is that there are clear rules both agree to. An email with a "hello we'll do this" does not make any rules clear. It's easy to misinterpret such a vague e-mail. Proved by this debate.

An Agreement make sure both sides have read, agreed and understood the rules and if they haven't its their own lazy self fault.

Why can't you do both?

I don't think that selling CDs online is a viable way to make money; in fact you are more than likely going to lose money printing 500-1000 CDs and trying to sell through through distro channels.

Also, you don't have to worry about putting a paywall between your music and your fans, you don't have to worry about getting pirated and people listening to shitty MP3s, and you get free promotion which hopefully will lead to gigs.

Then, at shows, you bring your own small run of CDs and sell them for $5-10 a pop. Not everyone is aware of Ektoplazm and its awesomeness, and some people really enjoy buying a CD direct from the artist.

I rail against CDs all the time, but I would gladly pay for a CD if I'm buying it directly from the person who made the music on it. Especially if I was just blown away by how awesome their set was.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

I echo this sentiment.

Hi
In my experience this is the best way to show your support to artists. many underground artists carry a few copies of their cds for selling and promotion.

Having Cd stalls at party's and festival is the probably the best to sell. It is "Instant Gratification" for the consumer and the artist project/label.
