Manipulating the genstructure of foods promises nice results, like the golden rice that contains important vitamins (?) and can be used as a full meal for a long time, or plants that clean the earth from poisons are already developed too. But who knows about the sideFx, maybe we going to destroy the natural genpool much faster then we thought???
Or is it just a new way of evolution, men's hand on the gens???

gene manipulation has been talked of through mythic characters like Centaurs, Gryphon etc. infact gene manipulation takes place naturally too, like when plants pollinate and stuff. i dont think it destroys the gene pool..it makes it larger

I think the danger is the potential for making a superbreed that will overpower other breeds of a species. eventually the other species could die out and thus reducing the gene pool. as such, the subtlties in a particular eco-system dependent on a specific breed coudl eb altered and have drastic influence ont aht system.
despite all that, I'm all for it. i'd love amngos i the winter.

natural is good .. u can clearly feel the difference in simple food items like vegetables .. the gm veggies look big , prettier .. but the organic taste better .. cmon .. nobody noticed ? onions , tomatoes , carrots ... etc ?

I think wise, carefully planned gene manipulation is the key to the future. The main problem is that people is ignorant about what in fact is gene manipulation, and (no offence intended) arguments like "natural is good" usually mislead people to wrong conclusions...
Enhanced may be better.

better looking for sure .. but I speak from experience here .. onions that taste watery , carrots that have no taste , eggs for sure !! cultured hens with injections poked in them daily give lousy small foul tasting eggs .... organic taste better .. period .
Or maybe im just yet to taste any GM foodstuff that would make me thing otherwise . interesting topic !

Today's genetic manipulation is ridiculous when compared with its potential, and in fact most genetic enhancement on food these days (not talking about transgenics which these days address at most a couple of genes, but on more natural gene selection) only address produtivity and/or other market effects. So IMHO mk47 has a valid point, but he is talking about something which is not the subject here and is kind of obvious: food selected for better productivity does not taste better.
IMHO real gene manipulation will allow the design of new living species with better nutritional value, taste, etc... Haven't you heard all those samples on that weird psytrance tracks?
