I wrote my tesis for my Political science barchelor degree about drug policy, in my research I came a across many good books but there is one that is above all the must complete, interesting and with the broader scope you can find: General History of Drugs, by Antonio Escohotado. You can find three editions of this book, the first one is A Brief History of Drugs: From the Stone Age to the Stoned Age, which is a resume of the big book, but its the only avaible english translation. In spanish there are two editions one in a single volume (1542 pages), by the name Historia General de las drogas, and other in a three volume, The single volume is the latest edition (with some improvements upon the oldest three volumes edition).

So what is so special about this book? The author presents a comprensive history, but also with deep sociological analysis of the developments of drug use through all cultures around the world (for which there is some kind of registry/evidence). It also goes very deep in to discussing the philosophical and religious systems behind each culture management of drugs, and the political developments that affected them.

You wont merely be reading about drugs, but also about philosophy, religion and politics which makes it very entertaining.

Then it has a second part (the last 400 pages) which are an index of almost every drug humans known, many descriptions come with a personal essay by the author who calims to have tried many of them.

Is also interesting to point out that Antonio Escohotado wrote the mayority of the book while in jail, charged for drug related crimes in the 80's. Since then it has been corrected and updated.

This is book is like Max Weber's usual work XD

If you can read in spanish go for the big volume.
