Anyone using the Gated Sub oscillator technique for boosting kicks,
.(ie a freerunning sine wave which is gated by the volume of the kick)
or do you retrigger a sub patch with every kick

I wouldn't use "free running" on anything in the low end, unless I'm really into some analogue feeling kind of thing, certainly not for KBBB psytrance combos.
But a simple sinewave providing the low end can go a long way, it can provide the subs for the kick and/or bass or both. A note that's almost one entire beat long can provide the drive and the upper bass layer carries the transients (upper frequencies filter mod slap kind of thing).
The Kick and Bass playing at the same time thing is a very unique effect on it's own, used a lot in Hip Hop for example and worth experimenting with. A lot of that going on some Ambient psy music as well. You just need to make sure to shave off the subs in the kick that the sub layer is going to provide and that they complement each other and feel as one. That's easy enough if things are tuned accordingly. |

yeah of course, not for a full on sort of bottom end
i would tend to use a parrallel high pass filter into a lowpass for that tightness
this is an old technique from the days of tape n shit
just interested in what folks use and results they get

you mean using hardware, don't you? having a sub sine wave going triggered by the kick is cool, can make some 808ish deep stuff. I like the sound of a sine wave going through some (not all) guitar amps to! nothing to fancy, just the added buzz of the electricity going I guess. dirty as hell! |

it can work nice but yes for psy not really needed imo..after depend what you are after.. a good analog eq boost will do the work perfect as a other solution |
