Why wait for the Intel ?!?!?
The G5 does it's job good enough...no need for an Intel...
That's my 50 cents |

G5 is good, but will get very soon outdated... and Intel will probably run faster too.

been with amd for a while but I can tell you (with a little inside info) that the upcoming intel chips wont be much more expensive, and will absolutely kill the current amd duals on performance....
when i get back from OS i know what my next purchase will be
cheers

Processing power isn't the only reason not to buy a G5. The most important reason IMO is that as time goes on, less and less products will be made to run on the G5. It is end-of-line technology. I would advise against buying one now unless it is dead cheap.
About processing power, it really depends what types of plugins you use. I have many projects with 100+ tracks, a dozen softsynths, 50+ plugins that run happily on my dual Opteron box but the current little mastering project with one stereo track and 7 plugins runs at 98% CPU!
Which brings me to the next point, once you start using high quality plugins, there is NEVER too much processing power in a DAW. I have a compressor that uses arround 73% of my DAW when set to 88.2Khz. That is one single plugin. I would love to use it for other purpouses than mastering but ...
There is NEVER enough processing power in any DAW. Give me a 8 CPU dual-core Opteron box and I will start using mastering grade plugins for all EQing and compressing. Guess what? I'll run out of CPU power very quickly.

The 73% CPU plugin was PSP MasterComp in a 88.2Khz project set to FAT mode (which means it is running internaly at 176.4Khz). I have a feeling there are some efficiency issues with the code of that plug but it sounded good for that project so I used it.

It would be nice to wait for the Intel-Macs, but then you have the problem that there nearly hasn't been released any software compatible with the Mac Universal Binary platform. This means that you maybe cannot find your fav vst/au plug as au UB (Universal Binary), and then wait for an au>au UB converter like there is a vst>au converter nowadays.
Other than this I think the new Intel Macs will run F*****' good, also compared to the already brilliant G5's..
I must admit that I never have thought of G5 as the "end of the line", but I really see the point in it.

Hello,
I´ve sold my G5 after 3 times of sending it to a Apple Service Partner due most Dual G5 2GHz has a problem with the PSU.
It emmits a harsh chrip sound wich killed my nervers.
Another negative point is that the small, cheap 6cm PSU fans are pretty loud. Simply exchanging them with 2 low noise fans would improve the silence dramaticly. But to change the fans you need to dismount the CPU which isn´t easy without documentation.
Now we come to Logic "Pro". Logic 7 was very unstable at the beginning. I have no clue how its workin´ now since I sold it. Logic 7 - 7.1.1 had a serious issue. Channels and Automation stopped working randomly.
Just my experiences.
