Very interesting topic.
My opinion would be to buy hardware but only if you can afford the really best ones. I have been and still am a hardware fun always.
But over the last years the progress on software technology made the difference between software fx, compressors, eq, limiters etc. and low to mid end hardware to dissappear.
Usually when my hardware synths don't have the fx i need i just record them and apply fx on cubase. For all the other tasks like eq, compression, limiting i use software plug ins which i find them working more than effeciently. The problem for me is in the final stage when i want to master my tracks. It's the time i wish i could have that external tube mastering processor.
So, i decided that since i can do whatever i want using plugins and get the results i want, the only thing remaining is to buy a tube mastering processor. But again since my budget is not that big i found out that the Focusrite Mixmaster has everything i need and also the feedabcks i get from users are very good regarding its quality.
On the other hand there is another alternative that you might consider. If you are definite on buying all the hardware you mentioned why don't you buy a digital mixer that has everything you want to buy seperately. Plus you're gonna have all the extra advantages a digital mixer has to offer. |

I'm with Alex on this one. Only buy hardware if you can afford the very best. (That means don't buy Behringer!)For mastering, use software unless you can pay 5000 euro or more PER unit.
I have a studio with DBX & Focusrite compressors, Drawmer gates, Lexicon, BOSS & Yamaha reverbs etc etc and I still do my mastering in software because it sounds cleaner and more controled. I would suggst the UAD1 card or Voxengo VSTs.
Having said that, a box of effects is always nice. I would suggest the TC m3000, TC D2, Lexicon MPX550 or 1.

well dark psy,
i'm no kid (and you know me in person, you might not relate me to whom you meet) and i already have a job
i just get bothered when people think they know it all and everyone else knows nothing.
i already have my opinion on the subject and i was looking for other opinions.
it's also stupid to keep hammering on the software key when i was looking for software
when i buy something i research it for months. i only buy classic and/or very verstile stuff. love every piece of gear i own and i also use software.
just trying to have the best of both worlds.

off course .. so my friend .. watch out .. how u speak with the persons over here .. and i just talk of what i know .. is it clear ? i hope so .. because im tired of egocentric attitudes !
so i gave my opinion .. and u gave your opinion .. and thats it !
if u dont like .. don't follow it follow outher opinions .. this is how this forum works ..
if u don't like get another forum .. or try to be more passive when u talk .. and not agressive .
and PS ... i dont know everything .. i learn every day , like u do .. and i love all of piece of hardware i buy too ..
but for does can't afford it .. i give they'r best options ..
so chill man ... the world ins't finish yet !
and one thing that we are both in the same option:
im just trying to have the best of both worlds.

for one second i thought this was going off topic lol, you don´t need to fight people, its just as simple as to give your opinion and then respect the others opinion, thats why people open posts here isn´t it?
well, my opinion is that the best piece of hardware you can buy is a soundcard, and very little more, cause there r no more analog hardware out there so the principle of vsts and digital hardware is very much the same, and i believe in a few years there won´t be any diference at all. to buy hardware in 2º hand is always risky cause if someone has a good piece of hardware they won´t sell it, if they do, most of the times is because its not workin completly well so....
just be carefull, and i totaly agree with alex, if you buy hardware buy the very best, for sure don´t buy behringer cause buying hardware just for spending money, or just for saying "i have hardware" hmmmm... not worth it i guess...
stay well |

hmmm... i don't really care about analog vs digital or hardware vs software
i just think is useless to insist on software if i was asking for hardware, isnt it (being a vst prophet that is)?
Software is good but you still need good hardware to take advantage from it (souncard, monitors, processor, ram, dps aceleration cards, etc).
I've got some hardware but i still use software alot. Gone are the times i used 100% hardware and i've got a better sound now
Anyway from the list i've post, i've given up on the itens for hardware mastering.
however im still in need of two fxs processors plus hardware mixer and i know that when i get those i'll still have to upgrade my pc and even buy a better soundcard.
Anyway, i'm still looking for the FXs processors (mostly for delay and reverb) and considering the chance of buying a soundcard w/ enough inputs to use VST fxs instead of hardware ones.
Either that or sampling every from the synth and applying FXs in the audio...
too many options, too little money... and the problem is to have to live with the mistakes...
My research will continue... |
