Hi!

I want to buy some fx racks to complement my studio but i know very little about them all.

I think i need the following:

- Some mastering stuff. Maybe one box that has multi-band-compression, eq, limiter, gate and expander(might not have all)

- compressor for bass and maybe for drums

- a multi-effects thingy to complement my waldord mw2 wich has verty few fxs

- good reverb unity

- anything else?

with this lot i would be doing some serious damage to my credit account and my neighbours health )

any recomendations out of your experience?

please, vst prophets, spare my time, ok?

regards, psychedelicly yours,

joão

I think i'd work on some tracks without all of this stuff until you delvelop the NEED for one of these pieces of gear. Why buy something if you don't even know why or how to use it ?

UAD-1...not VST but DSP, really good compressors and EQ
Maybe a TC powercore

Mastering stuff i would recommend Waves-L2 for $1700...basically a plugin in a hardware box...but it still sounds as good as the real L2
Of course you can also get a TC mastering processor...basically like a powercore in a hardware box...again sounds just like the real thing

FX i have a few collecting dust in the cupboard you can buy cheaply since I don't use them anymore.
Digitec studio 400 with digi I/O and the cheap but fun zoom1201.

Sorry...just provoking....really I don't understand why anyone would buy all that hardware...but each and everyone to their own.           (``·.¸(``·.¸(``·.¸¸.·`´)¸.·`´)¸.·`´)

you're starting to sound like my father, but dumber..

please, if you dont' have anything to say, keep the fuck quiet

spindrift: your sugestions are a bit on the expensive side, i think i'm going to opt for some behringer stuff

i've been using those things in software for a long time now, i just want the hard versions now.

i'm heading for the second hand stuff and i already have some prices

i know mastering stuff can be expensive but... i'm going for second best

first will be the multi-fxs stuff (my waldorf hasn't got a delay) and then a nice compressor for bass...

then some reverb to using in the mix to almost everything (i should really buy two reverb units, one for long reverbs other for short)

then the limiter and multi band compressor...

enough?

No need to flame my friend I just thought i read that you didn't know much about fx. Stupid me.

Spindrift is right about the UAD-1 and the Powercore. I use both and i'm really happy with them. They provide professional eq, compression, reverbs and other effects for a fraction of the price. And you can use the fx as plugins, without taxing your cpu.

sorry bobbytrip... i'm just a bit bothered with most of the replys i get in this forum... people here always reply the same thing over and over... independently of what the question is

of course others have been very helpfull (that's why i'm still here)

i understand much of how the fxs work (i'm able to build some of them) but not how they are sold

sometimes in this industry having the best or most expensive stuff, you have to have THAT compressor or THAT whatever... don't you think?

spindrift recomended stuff i can't afford (at least in the next months)

i think i'm going to buy some behringer stuff...

does anyone know if any of these are good?

Behringer Virtualizer Pro, 24bit digital effects processor.

Behringer Multicom Pro, compressor, four mono or two stereo linked compressors.

i've got nice pricse for both

also considering:

Alesis CLX 440 Compressor
or DBX 266 XL

mostly for bass compression

What about the TC electronic m300?

I've seen in winning awards for best buy in some magazines (sound on sound best buy award 2002)

Check it at

thanks FluoSamsara... that's a nice sugestion... also one that made me remember that future music publishes a .pdf with a lot of equipment and their reviews of it...

also, i've been advised to get a warm compressor and a transparent compressor... what the fuck does that mean?

i understan warm and transparent, but how do i know wich is wich? sugestions?

i would do what boobytrip said .. learn first ... to get everything at the point ... when u see that u really understand the concepts of each stuff .. it will be more usefull ... now if u buy something that i never touched before and i dont know how to work ... it will be money lost .. cause if will be a piece of hardware stoped in wrong hands :;P .. read .. learn .. then buy !!
its my best advice to u

u wrote "please, vst prophets, spare my time, ok?" ..
i totally disagree with u .. cause .. for astering i dont use any hardware .. and the last track for the album .... they were all master in logic at home .. only with VST ... and who take the cd for th album .. loved the master !!! and each tracki make .. when i get to the end now ! i look i hear and i say this dont need nothing else !!! .. so .. its just like i said .. u need to learn more before saying such as bullshits ok ?

it will be a good help for u

Don't get the Behringer stuff!
Im not a Behringer bacher at all but you can get alot better software compressors than the Behringers!
The Sonalksis compressor or Waves Renaissance are superb.
I know you said no VST's, but why do you say this and then talk about lowend fx when you can get way better plugins?
The UAD-1 also is a very good idea for compressors and EQ.

Stay away from TC M300 reverb! I demoed it some time agot...what a peace of crap! Sorry to you who like it but I think it is. You can get sofware reverb that sound better for free (ambience or SIR). The TC M-one XL sounded alot better if it has to be hardware.

About warm and transparent compressors. I think that most preople agree that the FMR RNC compresseor is about as transparant as can be and it's cheap as hell! Ok you might find more transparent ones but for the price of the RNC? No way! If were talking warm I don't think that you'll be able to find any cheap ones. Tube compressors are usually crap when there cheap. The cheap solid state compressors and preamps are usally better than a cheap tube one. The word "tube" is no guarantee for warm/highend sound and is just used as a sales gimmick. But when we get to the higher priced tube gear thats another story. People who are prepared to pay 3000$ for a compressor know what they wan't and know what the'll get.

And one thing about using hardware fx and compressors. You need a very good soundcard (highend converters) if you wan't to run audio out from it and then back in. Otherwise your sound will be serious downgraded, even if you have higend outboard gear. It's just like recording a 100.000$ violin with a crappy mic.

I hope you can see my point because I do belive I have one.
