After many years of listening to FX in used on tracks, and finding most of these FX on sample cd's. Ive started to wonder who creates the samples used on the cds. and what they may use to create these fx?

Maybe its just me thats tripping about this as im in the process of filling my latest track with home-made-fx but some of the fx on those sample cd's are so crisp. Anyone care to enlighten on a guide making crisp FX? Any successful proceedures to ensure top quality sounds?

Cheers

Good FX... this is what im all about at the mo.
I think ur right PoM, sometimes it DOES help. But as u say... you can do this by yourself. So how do U do it? Im not meaning to be provocative... Just hope that people will share the knowledge that lies behind producing good FX, and what one should use + tips & tricks.

Surely its not just me and vipal lookin for this

Now were talkin age_of_panic ! Yes, rip them from sci-fi movies, (may i add) horror movies, Discovery channel - National Geographic etc. What else can we do? Surely we can hook some of these recorded sounds up with some LFO's to get some interesting FX... Or?

Keep em comming producers

Lets say we want to make some sweeps? How about using a synth?

you can take a saw with bp filter. resonance is max, play a very deep note and slowly open the cutoff. thats it. maybe you have to tweak the other settings a bit.

Excellent... bp filters ... what about bit crushing the sweeps? Distortion? Does delay or reverb affect the clean/tight sound of a sweep when ur creating it (yes in my eyes). u can always put these type of fx on a sweep after uve made the sweeps right.

Hope we get some more and varied answers.

Thx a bunch for the input guys. Lets keep crackin at this issue til we get some great results!

I'd suggest looking into fm synthesis. You'll find some good free synths on kvr. One of my favourite synths for fx is linplug octopus, pretty awesome.

For spicing up I often use the free plug buffer override. Google it           soundcloud.com/epsylohm

open synth
find nice preset to start with
tweak and tweak until you know which parameters you like to tweak for the final result
start record and tweak the hell outa this sound
now you have long wav , with many many samples , all from the same basic preset
add delay , reverb , flangers , bitcrusher , distortion , and anything realy (i also reccomend the http://smartelectronix.com/ stuff)
there you go , homemade samples

i actualy love sample cd's tho

Aiyro - if you want original effects you should do them your self...
sound FX can be so much, so its hard to give some general advice..

one advice is to make the sound FX from the existing elements... it will blend good with the rest

crisp sound FX, yeah i know what you mean, they have been skillfully crafted, probably clean sound from the start, and good sounding FX processors... and just enough FX´s and not too much...

it sound like you want somekind of recipe, why not just cook your own... and reflect on the ingredients.

it all up to your imagination

tweak it!

as you ask for some idea ill just give a random idea...

set up your microphone, condenser mic, and press record,
take your cooffe cup or tea cup, now lift the spoon that rests against the cups side and just let it hit the side of the cup, it will bounch a little..
put the sample in your sequencer or audio editor, add reverb, and delay... try distortion, try pitch automation so it gets all woobly.. try tremolo, vibrato... chours, flanger, phaser... try and revers the whole sample or just a segment of it...

you can experiment alot, or you already know what you want to do, so then you do it...

My bad freeflow... Its not that i dont know how to cook fx... but as with many other things, if u follow a recipe (doesnt have to be precise) then u often come out with something good. I guess, i was kind of looking for THE way to make quality FX, but yeah i see ur point... I guess after being very creative with sounds for a while and not yet achieving THE sound, you get kind of annoyed but all good. Its a struggle up hill but when u get there, its a pleasant view...

Now back to whats up... How do u peoples like to process ur FX?

cheers M
