percussion tutorial is definitely a good idea
i always get frustrated with percussion
Projection makes perception. The world is what you gave it, nothing more than that. It is a witness to your state of mind, the outside picture of an inward condition. As a man thinketh, so does he perceive- Anonymous

Hello. About you guys seeking percussion tutorials i can give sum advice, maybe not video or not now at least.
But check out:
- On 4/4 basic techno patterns (4 on the floor) SNARE / CLAP is the main groove driver. Just have to think about the CONTRAST in your loop. One kick goes clean another goes with SNARE / CLAP. TUN - KAS - TUN - KAS
Starting from here you can think of your loop as a couple of 2/2 or a whole 4/4. Now the placement of all percussion have to be related to this "movement" you are creating betwen kicks wo snare and the ones with.
You can go filling the offbeats with a nice openhat. And place closed hats on every kick step. Then you have the basic pattern everybody knows how to create.
The hard part here is innovating while maintaining the groove and i will share sum of the stuff that often helps:
- Don't try to go crazy placing percussion. Simple is the best, some unexpected sounds at unexpected steps are good but not too much.
- Always think and LISTEN, everytime you add another sound at a specifi step you are either helping or screwing the flow of the rythm, sometimes a weird sounding perc can be fixed or balanced with another. Just listen to the flow, dance and if you don't feel that urge to shake your head, hands and feet delete the unwanted percussion or move to another point.
- Percussion is all about dynamics, different sounds at various time and frequencies. But don't break your head too much, too much variation will sound chaotik just as i said before: always work towards or from the clap / snare since it is the axis of the basic elektro beat. Think of the 2 & 4 kicks in a 4/4 loop as the ones that "throw" the rythm. Then the open and close hats work just as something that bounce.
- As they say: experimenting is the key just don't work much on something that doesn't feel right. Start with a basic K-ch-OH-ch-KS-ch-OH-ch-
Then you begin to place other sounds on top of that, every 16th has it's magic, sometimes swing and tripplets work too.
My 2 cents. hope it helps i struggled much with percussion but when i began to notice this particular stuff i improved. cheers. |
