Hey fellow isratrancers,
check out what this chick DJ can do

Just added to her site is "Shambhala Set 2005" and "Live At Reflections" from 2004. go to www.wendyj.net, then click on "MUSIC" button.
Clicking on the title will stream MP3, or there is a RealAudio player option button for each mix as well.

Style: dark but happy, funky full-on psy trance - in other words, fun daytime stuff.

Hope ya like it, thanks for listening

Just heard the "Shambala" set - fine tracklist with a lot of my favourite artists (the only track that I really didn't like was the opening track), but perhaps the vibe in the tracks was too similar through the mix. I like when there is more variation, but ok - it's only 1 hour

The mixing is ok for my , and I like that you don't use the same formula in all your mixes - but generally the beatmixing could need some work: I'm not saying it's total trainwreck in each mix, but there where just a tad too many doublebeats for my liking.

Generally a fairly good mix though, hope my comments where useful. If you're interested, you can find two of my mixes in these topics:

I'm open for all kinds of feedback (also bad, as I know they aren't perfect ;-))          DJ pr0fane (Iboga Records) | Multiphase

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, I know it isn't perfect. I could've spent way more time on it, editing every mix until it was perfect, but I decided to leave it the way it is. This recording is a live contiguous laydown to a real-time CD recorder. NO editing. Yeah, there's a couple mixes where I had to chase the beats a little and I kinda cringe a little bit whenever I hear those spots. But honestly, most people never hear what you & I hear.

I approached this recording as if it were a live mix. No rehearsing, no warm-up, no cheat notes...just decide on a tempo and go at it, cold. I was fairly happy with the results. The only people who are going to hear all the real flaws are the super trained ears, such as yourself (and probably everyone else on Isratrance!). I do appreciate your input for sure.

For a "real" demo, I would definitely plan more carefully the track selection and choreograph the mixing more concisely. I would edit & master the mix. This particular mix was what I played at Shambhala in Canada last August. The promoter cut my set to an hour, but kept my Sunday sunrise slot time. So I went for it. I just wanted to get this set recorded, to share with those who were there, and those who weren't. Perhaps I shouldn't have posted on Isratrance, where everyone on here is a pro. I'm still very new at the psy scene - barely 2 years. I love it very much, though. I found a home for my musical soul.

I will take a listen to your mixes. Thanks again for your comments. I found them very useful and I agree with you completely on all points. Of course this mix could be better, and I could keep working on it until I got too sick of it to ever hear it again, or the tracks got stale, or worse; shelve it permanently. But that's not my intention. It's fun, something home-made. No computer touched this mix. Now I can get on with my life, and start working on the next projects. I feel if I make something perfectly edited and mastered I would have to sell it, and since I cannot afford to get licencing rights for the tracks, I cannot possibly bring myself to take any money for my DJ mix CDs. They are gifts for personal and promotional use only.

Perhaps I am condemning myself, putting such a "sloppy" set on public display on Isratrance. Maybe I should've waited until I had something perfect and polished. Then again, it could take me another year before that happens.

But I decided to go ahead & post it because the music is for sharing. I love this music and this scene, and if I get a new gig or two out of it, then I will be thrilled. But I'm not expecting it at all.

I love and appreciate constructive critisism as well, because how the heck can we every excel and grow if all we get is compliments?

Thanks again for taking the time to listen, and taking the time to write.

Hi Wendy,

You seem very defensive in your comment, and let me again point out that I did in fact like your mix. You opened a quite interesting subject on the point of taking notes and planning ahead, but there's two sides of the coin

I will openly admit that I have taken notes and planned my downloadable sets in advance - I haven't edited or mastered afterwards though. I don't think its fair to call it cheating - I would much rather play a well-prepared set with a good flow and risk loosing some Elite DJ-reputation points, than playing a totally unprepared set and risk making some bad mixes.

Remember that your finest task as a DJ is to provide the best possible set for the crowd/listeners, and if that for some DJ's means planning ahead - whatever their reasons - then so be it           DJ pr0fane (Iboga Records) | Multiphase

This goes for me as well - Almost all my sets are planned - Also at parties, however, I can deviate from the plan, if I think it is needed (if I can do it better by deviating, I will).

This is called "preparation" and how every DJ prepares sets is up to the DJ and no one else. What matters, is the end product, the experience - nothing else matters, at all.

Still, for me, it has to be a "live" recording which shows the skills of the DJ - So editing things afterwards on a computer is a big no no.

Trying out how tracks mix together in advance and such - Well, thats about "knowing your tracks" - So, the better you know them, the better you can mix them - Especially if you decide to deviate from what is prepared.

If it helps to be prepared, then preparation is the professional thing to do.

---

I look forward to listening to your mix wendy, if pr0fane likes it - Chances are I will too

And a few double beats will not really matter that much to me - Its the music thats most important

Best Wishes

@Wendy

I have listened to the "Shambhala Set 2005" one now.

Track selection is different - I think, at some points you spin tracks which I like, but are different from what I would normally listen to. (this is a good thing - since I liked them)

The mixing in no way annoyed me - and the doublebeats where often due to "thin" beats which are harder... There was some phasing in the bass, actually, I found that most annoying, but it didnt happen that often (pr0fane didnt mention that one I think).

Mmm, Id like the set to be longer - would have been interesting to see where you would have taken the sound.

There are some annoying distorted sounds when you mix - I dont know, maybe the levels got too high ?

If I saw you on a lineup on a festival, Id get up and hear what you would spin.
It wasnt the typical full on formula all the way thru, and as such, your taste is a bit more unique than my own.

For me, it would do well in the evening, before more heavy nighttime full on and dark psy.

Best Wishes and happy djing:-)

Krell and Pr0fane, thanks so much for taking the time to listen and to write.

I was originally booked to play 90 minutes at Shambhala, then when I arrived at the event, I found they cut my set to an hour.

I do prepare my sets in advance, making my track listing for a gig, gearing my style and track selection towards when I play and who plays before and after me. Not only do I try to make a journey, tell a story so to speak with my own set, but I also do my best to provide musical continuity between DJs as well. I feel that helps the overall musical flow and vibe of the party alot. Plus the DJ who comes on after me usually appreciates the set up as well. Of course, it largely depends on what musical style the next guy plays after me.

I try to get as much info as possible for every gig. I believe in being as professional as possble. Preparing a set is good for me, on many different levels. It can always be adjusted on the fly, but at least there is a basic structure to go by.

As for my Shambhala set mix, yes, the phasing is from getting the beats matched too exactly... they cancel each other out. As for a sound you heard, maybe it happened when my web master downloaded the mix? The master recording is clean. I didn't clip or distort when I recorded. I pay very close attention to levels and gain settings all the time.

thanks again to all of you very much, for taking the time not only to listen, but to write as well!!!

love
