Organizing ideas is good unless you aren't able to implement the idea at once, right now, when it came to you.
What NychroLogic wrote in his first post is a good example of an asid trip at its peak Lets face it, in real life all this effects won't sound that way. So what I would do is make that intro as close as i can to the idea and then get something to test if it works.

Once you spend enough time on this you will find that there are not really many effects you can create, i mean, possibilities are endless but the "industry standard" sounds are just a few.

This sonic palette of filter sweeps, 303 stabs, chordy keys / pads, vocal snipets, hits, lazers, growls and squelches, pitched lfo and atmospheric stuff... you just have to know what to use in order to achieve what you have in mind, that's why again i suggest: know your tools.

It is like that guy on the "The Mother of all LEADS thread" that was asking how do a lead last week and answer was like: sawtooth + bandpass filter + distortion.
And the guy was like "really? just that?"

Some nice sounds are just simple parameters set to certain values, but you have to understand what you are doing.

I recently formated my PC and had a fresh install of only some vsts, those who i use and know the most and those i want to learn better...

Want a long pitched line? use synth1 with long envelopes at the mod env. Want crazy filtering trancegate? use discovery with some of my self made presets for fx... want some fat bass i use my mopho... see how i have my prefered tools for specific job? Not that they are the only ones but i know how to use them and i get the job done then render to audio and continue to make music other way one could spend all day switching synths and presets just looking for that rising lfo sweep that no trance preset bank for sylenth1 yet has.

It might be stupid but i do a lot of sounds with my mouth and that gives me an idea of what i want hehe.

I am a little geek and like to know the exact function of each parameter so get your synths' manuals ready. One learn a lot from reading them since many synths have a specific architecture that features some unique characteristics.

smoke spliff s good to make the ideias show up in the mind but if u are obsessed with the splif u start to loose motivation... imo marijuana in excess make u loose motivation coz u aint doin nothing if not under the effect of the spliff..

dont get me wrong.. i love to smoke spliff... but after sometime i realized that smoke spliff everyday s no good for the will.... at least for me....

so what i do nowadays is start to make a track in random without the influence of nothing...

and i use the spliffs in the weekend upon bases that i have already created so i can create new ideias for that base.....

( obs : im talkin bout spliff coz i see some people advicin spliffs for ideias which i agree but gotta be careful... )

When I started to make music for the first two months i tried to recreate the sound of certain artists, in order to learn my synths and tools in a coordinated way, and not just mess around, because it is easy to make something that sounds cool, and not something specific.

So I made one track that sounded like Yahel (to get those cool synths), one that sounded like Atmos, one like Anthony Rother etc... Obviously they didnt sound nearly as good as the originals, but I learned how to get at those particular sounds.

So, now I got pretty good at getting the sound I have in my head through the speakers, still at a N00b level of course, but it sounds the way I want it to.           Check out my album: http://www.ektoplazm.com/free-music/gay-satanic-hippie-tiefenrausch

i guess it is individual. i rarely smoke for recreation. in the studio that really helps with new ideas and the flow. often, after 'checking' an almost finish track i rearrange it by 60-70%. quite critical?

that happens to me too, hear an almost finished track, and then, new ideias pop, i change everything in it, and it becomes a complete different track

hey POM at least for me the problem i had with marijuana s that without marijuana i wouldnt have the willl and motivation to do stuffs that i like to do like per exemple make a tune.... obviously such thing s removed after lets say 2 days without smokin... ( result of smokin every darn day for months/years in a roll )

but i didnt like that dependency and i get better results like makus has said...

" in the studio that really helps with new ideas and the flow. often, after 'checking' an almost finish track i rearrange it by 60-70%. quite critical? "

so after u have done a hard working in a track to smoke a joint to re check it will give u new flow for this track.... but people are different ... remember that...

Love smoking bud in the studio. I can't positively say it "helps" but it makes the music making process more enjoyable.

Peace out.
