OK maybe not exactly a musical question but close
I got a ton of old DAT tapes with all the old classics from the 90's. I would love to record them into my computer so they can go on CD's.
I got a M-Audio Fast Track Pro USB sound card but my question is if anyone here know the exact way to hook up a stationary DAT machine to the M-Audio box and if you have any good advice on the software best suited to record the tunes. I am on PC Win 7.
Thanks in advance
P.S. I searched Google but did not find a satisfying answer among the many topics.

A MBox is not an M-Audio Fast Track Pro
I've already read that link. It did not solve my question.
Problem is there seem to be an issue with the digital in on the M-Audio Fast Track Pro and the digital out on DAT's. Something to do with the signal not being the same. So I was wondering if anyone here have any suggestions. Such as experience with an converter from digital out to analog in etc?

Sorry that was wrong. It should be the opposite way. From Analog out on the DAT to digital in on the M-Audio.

There is no analog in on the sound card. Only a digital in that does not match the digital out on the DAT. But thanks for the input
Anyone who have some suggestions?

Again as I wrote earlier it is not an MBox but an M-Audio Fast Track Pro
I did Google for it but only found a lot of complaints that the digital signal going in had issues when connecting from a digital out on DAT's.
This is why I asked here before I go out to buy example a digital cable that wont work.
The Mic/Inst input on the front is not an ideal option.

Ah, my apologies.

You don't need a specialised digital cable; any good-quality RCA-RCA cable should do for short runs. My advice would be to try it with one of the phono cables you already have, although there is a very slim possibility (approaching zero IMO) that it actually needs a specialised 75-ohm coax cable.

Whilst it obviously won't have the bit-transparency of a digital connection, the line input on the front should be perfectly adequate for your needs if you still can't get the digital connection working, given the quality of the analog electronics on both the M-Audio and your DAT player. What are your reasons for not wanting to use it?

The reason why I hesitate to use the front Mic/Inst is that I dont know of any cable going from phono out to such a insert (cant remember the name of the insert).
I think i'll try out the RCA-RCA and hopefully get lucky

The line input socket on the front will take a guitar cable as well as an XLR; you can get RCA->1/4" adaptors quite cheaply. Of course, a digital connection will still give the best quality. Good luck!
