Psy trance from an American band? Sure, why not. The US has an untapped wealth of great psy acts. (Though, the untapped part is changing.) But, back to the matter at hand – Frequency Deluxe. The album as a whole has a great sound. Comparisons to GMS shouldn’t come as a surprise, being that member Shanti Matkin has worked with the dynamic duo in the past. Potential was plain to hear in the first three tracks. Unfortunately, they don’t really progress too much, and I was getting disappointed. Then “Drip Technique” (#4 for those that are keeping count) wanders in and hits like a ton of bricks! From here on in, you can really see the album take off with tracks such as the dance floor slaughtering “Big Game Hunting” and technoid “Our DNA is Better than Yours”. The album closes out with 2 tracks previous released on Agriglyph. Overall, not a bad release, but it doesn’t really take us anywhere we haven’t been before. A solid purchase for fans of the GMS sound.

Good Review. Most Long time GMSers will know these tracks: they seem quite old.

          Within this timeless gathering,
a shining light does dance,
lost from conscious memory,
but visible in trance!

Frequency Deluxe - s/t [Kagdila]

1. "Slideruler"
Bassline just sort of rumbles along. Some pretty nice synthesis in the background. Nothing really grabs me, but the sounds are nice. Not a bad tune.. nice layering, just no real peak except in the number of layers... no melody, well maybe one, but it's simple & almost as annoying as the bassline.

2. "Ridamdiculous"
This has got a bit more of a minimalistic feel to it, not in terms of the 'minimal trance' sound, more than, at the start at least, it's a little withheld.. I like it. Nice synths. Track doesn't really do much though. Just sorta cruises along. It's alright I guess...

3. "Online Gamerland"
Hmmm.. this one didn't suck me in in the slightest. Just seemed to do the same thing for the whole 6:57. Typical full on style, a bit different to most of the cheesey stuff, but similar tempo & rhythm. Not my bag at all.

4. "Drip Technique"
Nice zappy synths but the bass sound is annoying.. it's very mid-range. Cool percussion though. Some pretty psychedelic noises in there. However, it's pretty simple on the whole. Good progression throughout the track, but no melody to bring it home, just noises.

5. "Big Game Hunting"
Hey! This one sounds kinda nice! Cool melodies just sitting in the background create atmosphere to begin with. This is unfortunately spoilt by monotonic synth noises that seem to serve no purpose other than to demonstrate that the artist needs to learn the art of the mix-down. Some nice synths but I'm going to have to skip this one.. it's giving me a headache.

6. "K Dila"
Well this is the first bassline so far that hasn't grated on me.. sounds like old Magus or something. This one is a bit groovier, with some nice filter work on the drums. Definitely my favourite so far. Simple yet effective melody halfway through sets up the next funkier section nicely. Good groove to this one.

7. "Our DNA is Better Than Yours"
I've heard this one before.. maybe on a Tip comp or maybe 3D Vision? It's got your typical rolling bassline, tight percussion & squawky synth noises that dancefloors seem to dig. Nice respite from the bassline a couple of minutes in... slightly groovy, spacious section. Very crisp, rocking psytrance, but I prefer the last track.

8. "Darbin Kruger"
This one's sounding pretty fluffy right from the start. Well this one seems to have the same noises-over-bassline syndrome that most modern psytrance seems to suffer from. It does get better towards the end though, with a dash of melody, however simple, being introduced amongst thickly layered synths.

9. "Sci Dept"
Pretty punchy beginning. Nice noises. Decent percussion. Bit ho hum about this one though. It's nice & all.. I like the sounds... just don't know about the composition / melodies / song progression / musicality.

10. "Brainwash"
Token chill track alert! However, nice water sounds & chimes. Oh OK, then the bass kicks! Haha! Alright, you got me. Another crankin bassline, another bunch of well synthesised noises, arranged very neatly, but not evoking any particularly strong emotional response. If I was wasted at a party I'd prob'ly jig along unconsciously.

Overall, yeah yeah, not bad, but nothing special. 5/10.           new Hadal Drop album on the way

if you don't have the last one get in touch
