Am I understanding correctly that all sounds in your mix have either inaudible or partially audible frequencies in areas across the frequency spectrum that you don't want there to be sound?
Therefore it is wise to remove via high and low pass filters all unwanted frequencies to get rid of that sort of 'muddy' sound and allow your bass, leads etc have their own space?
I was using the default Q function in Cubase to do this, but I'm unconvinced of its quality and total removal of sound, it seems to just adjust the volume.
I was wondering what anyone else uses, if I've got it right and if they can recommend some plugins for cleaning sound up in this way, I'm willing to pay a fair amount because I think its a fundamental of the sound quality. |

Like said, use an eq, like "waves parametric eq 8" or something. Set a narrow Q and cut it all away down like -10 or whatever. Then sweep through the frequency spectrum and cut the areas that make the sound cleaner(or doesent effect the sound). After that you should decrease the Q a little bit.
And remember this: Eventhough some frequencies are inaudiable, it doesn't mean that they don't eat up headroom =) |

hi there tomos,
there were many topics with freq tables, mainly for the drums and basses. im doing a search now and ill post the links if i find sumthing...
anyways i think you are taking the right path to a inteligent and proper mixing... i recommend any parametric eq, with at leats 4 bands, try to eq using the lightest plugin you can cauz you'll end adding eqs to every channel ;D hope it helps brother,

Thanks for the replies.
I hear Waves mentioned a lot across the forums but I have no idea what I should invest in. I've seen waves Platinum, Renaissance.. and more.
Quick question about mastering; surely you should get the best possible sound during the arrangement stage pre mixdown. Does mastering increase sound quality (how?) or is this an overall volume thing, like running the mixdown through a compressor.
Somebody mentioned dithering to me once, but I don't have this option in Cubase when I come to export my track. ? |

mastering has some slight touches of EQ (to make it standard with other tracks)... as well as master level dynamic processing not only your volume will be boosted but the track will feel more balanced and better (if mastered well of course). |

Having investigated waves platinum, I'm gonna save for another month and go with it. It looks packed with useful things!
Is that Blue Plug In the same as recommended by broken toy then? Whats so good about it (other than it being free!)
Cheers guys. |

waves works very good for low and mid frequences, the cubase standart parametric eq is better for high frequences imo. just my taste.
anyway, proper eqing is the key.

Will invetigate Sonalksis too.
