but then, we hear on a logarithmic scale. What if we took the frequency span of light and translated it to a linear (or possibly another logarithmic) scale?
It's not the specific frequencies that matter as much as the relationship between them, yah?

Call me Mr Negative if you will, but if I spend time effort and valuable brain cells (they're in short supply ) sorting out the relationship between my root note and track tempo as well as writing a head mashing track, then some DJ decides to play my track at a different tempo (bloody DJ's, I MADE IT AT THAT TEMPO FOR A REASON!!!! ), won't all my hard work dissapear when my track is pitch shifted??
I mean, although my track will still sound fine, the tempo / frequency relationship will be innacurate, and thus, be wrong.
I hope I'm wrong, 'cos just the thought of genuine synchronicity between all my tracks harmonics, tempo and crowd / audience sound's just TOO good!

By the way, what should we do about the frequencies we cannot hear but FEEL. Freq's below 20Hz are primarily used for warfare and incapacitating (eg. a certain frequency at a certain volume aimed through a directional speaker device (cannon) can cause your stomach to vibrate & resonate causing immediate nausea). When these freq's are absent from the audio spectrum, we FEEL the difference, if you ever get the chance, go to a pro recording studio that uses an OTARI or STUDER 2 inch multitrack tape machine and feel what the difference is for yourself. Tape records well above & below our hearing capacity, but those extra frequencies really influence what the sounds within our hearing range sound like. Maybe one day, our digital equipment will enable us to correctly record the same 1hZ - 80kHz frequency range as a pro tape machine !!!

Since the entire track is pitched up/down, isn't the relationship maintained?
Granted, if they use one of those tempo locks to keep the pitch the same while adjusting the bpm, then yeah, it'd sound weird. But then doing that makes the track sound weird anyways, in my opinion.

So we couldn't even timestretch the audio back into a whole number to make it DJ friendly! Will this mean that the demographics of the DJ will change into Maths professors and those who can calculate pi to 12 decimal points??
Let's see a DJ turn up with 2 24-track tape machines, a 48 channel mixing console and a lorry load of 2 inch reels for a gig!
As far as tape goes, I'm an ex studio engineer, so I'd glady sell my first born for only a decent photograph of a Studer A80
