OK, here's the deal.
If you want to make music on a proffesional level, it's been done with Fruity Loops before (Texas Faggot, Sienis, Krumelur), but it's damn hard to get top notch quality out of it. Cubase SX and Logic are much better solutions in the long range. Monitors and a proffesional soundcard are very important for working as well, and a control keyboard also makes life a lot easier. As well as good headphones too.
But before you get on to that, I'd recommend you sit down on fruity loops, have a little fun with it, get some sample CDs and search google for more samples. Don't spend money on anything quite yet. Getting a feel for making music takes a while, and it's a lot of hard work, by the time you reach proffesional levels, prices will drop, new hardware will be invented and so on. One step at a time, no need to rush.

Thanks for the tips lucas! I have Fruity Loops now though, so I will focus my efforts on learning for now.
One thing I might need though and would like to ask you guys is, "how do I edit samples? Does FL do that? What program do I need to use to edit wav files, make them fit on a specific BPM, cut some parts, etc?
Take care!

hey guys how come no one mentioned reason????
It is the only thing the guy needs at the moment ,
also forget about cubase, delta soundcard (a soundblaster audigy is more than enough for your level at the moment)e.t.c they are not use to you now.
Have this as a rule always buy somethinmg that is under your capabilities otherwise is a waste of money until you reach the level to use them they will become obsolete.
FL is an option also but reason is far more superior than FL for what you are after (make music to take away the everyday stress)
Reason is much more easy to use and it is great fun, it comes with all the documentation you need to get started , find also some reffills and you are sorted. Also a book has been just published that looks that can help get started with reason as well as help you go deeper into the more obsure functions of the programme
Anyway you can download demos from both of them read all about it and check them yourself.
http://www.propellerheads.se/ for reason
www.fruityloops.com
Strongly reccomended reason than anything else,
After one year that you are going to progress then you can start thinking about a getting an audio card like delta , and a professional sequencer like cubase sx which supports rewire for reason and you can further edit&mix your tracks
As for the guy who said that tutorials cant teach you anything, everything is on your head and fantasy, i agree if he talks about song arrangment patterns, structure e.t.c. but it is imposible to learn to use a programm starting from zero without reading manuals, pdf documentation, help files e.t.c.

Soundforge is the best sample editor for what you want buit you can also use acid if you just want to cut some parts and is dead easy to make them fit into a specific bpm.
you can also change the pitch and timestrecth it with fruity loops cant remember how is done though if i am not mistaken change the number of the bar in the lower left corner of the sample window but i remember that acid can do it much better |

gkalpakas, thank you so much for sharing so many links with all of us! It will be VERY useful on my quest for music and I am sure it will also help lots of other people around here!
Right now I will only use Fruity Loops, but I am having trouble to do three things with it:
1) create atmospheric sounds (4-8 bars long) I think I will need a synth for that, right? Any advice? Software only please
2) the samples just dont fit well, and sometimes I want to edit WAVs, so I will try to find a free program for that, shouldnt be very hard, I dont need any advanced functions yet, and sound forge or acid pro are just too complex and expensive for what I need right now. One thing at a time
I am very surprised that I actually made something already. I hope to have a song in a week. OF COURSE, its simple as hell, I have been playing with FL for two days now, but tons of stuff that I learned when I was a kid playing piano are coming back to me, sloooowly...
gkalpakas, you live in greece right? Do you like uplifting stuff? Greek trance is too clubby for my taste but I do like it sometimes. Do you produce that kind of stuff?
Take care!

I'm using Absynth for that, but I think it'll be way to compilcated for you.
I'm quite sure FL is capable of doing those sounds. Maybe you're just doing it wrong?

MikeA, I just found out a new thing on FL... BeepMaps! They are SWEEET...! And I also just learned how to use FX... so its been improvements over improvements around here
I hope to have something in a week to show you guys! Could you take a look and tell me what you think? Its very early material, but all advices, feedbacks and inputs are more than welcome!
Its MUCH darker than the stuff I want to produce, but its a way I found to learn the initial steps - making dark trance is IMHO much easier.
Take care and....

Don't produce what is easy to produce, produce what you want to produce.
It is difficult when you begin, but don't get stuck to it when you are more advanced.

Thanks for the advice Mike! I won't stay on this dark line though. Its just a way I found to begin.
Its been almost a week I have been playing with Fruity and its been awesome to notice a HUGE door of perception opening right in front of my eyes!
Thanks for all the help you guys are giving. I hope to give it back to you in form of music!
Take care and...

No I prefer to use more percussion or fx
than synth lines . I am curious to know which Greek stuff you call clubby.
Today i played around with a new piece of software by Arturia called Storm.
It is a complete virtual studio package that is seemed easy to use , not so flexible as reason but better sample quality. It has synths and sounds made for uplifting.
It is not complex to edit a sample with soundforge (open the file, then select and cut ) or with acid (use the acid chopper)
also ithink this is possible with the demo versions. |
