Today one of my DJ buddies told me that after 10 years of being released a song is free to be remixed and used as part of your tunes, without even have to cut a deal or ask permission to the Author.
Do you guys knew about this? Or is this a joke?

In most contracts, you own the rights to the work after 10 years of the release date. Which means you can re-release it anywhere or do whatever you want with it.
Dunno about others taking advantage of this clause though.

We are based in England.
Maybe its only aplicable to the UK law and artists.
Looks like I have to dig in into the UK music law, just don't really know where to start.
This would be great for certain samples or if you have a comercial project going on and would like to revive an old hit.

http://www.ehow.com/video_2384676_how-long-does-music-copyright.html
this is just the first video i found on google.
i guess it has to do with each countries law.
i had the same question some years ago and i asked several lawyers on the matter. i got the same exact answer from all of them BUT surely concerning greek songs and music. rights can be re-acclaimed by anyone after 40 years the track has been released.
that's why their children and grandchildren tend to re-copyright those old songs before this 40-year period ends.
so, just run your countries laws and if you find old songs that accidently aren't copyrighted right now, you can actually make them YOURS, as if you had composed them, in just a few steps. then re-record them, sell them, distribute them. music and lyrics will be yours.
ok, elvis and beetles won't go down that easily but there are tons of great songs by artists that they didn't make it in their period, and their grandchildren don't even give a fuck about their music.

Your friend got no clue!
After 10 years all legal rights goes back to the artist(s) and none of the works are free to exploit whatsoever and only after 70 years (some countries 100 years) the music is truely free.

Man that is twisted, the law "should" cover every track forever.
