So far I've listened to 'Nordishness' and 'Atom'. Great feel for structure and flow. Some of the sequences aren't that original, but there's lots of playfulness with fills and stuff, which I love.

A couple of the high synth sounds in 'Nordishness' I find a touch whiny for my taste. The portamento on one of the high synths (which kicks in at 4:21) I don't like a lot.

I'm not generally that fond of portamento when it is used this way. On a TB303 (or Rebirth etc) the portamento can be turned on or off for each note, but if you can't (or don't) do that on the synth you're using, playing a note following a rest will generally mean that the note's pitch will always have to slide from the pitch of the last note played, and if there was a break between the notes you will have the sound starting on a slide. Not necessarily a bad thing but I find it can often weaken and mess up the attack of notes when used in a lead synth.

On trick you might like to try is to have silent notes in your sequence (ie velocity = 0) so that the pitch for the purposes of the portamento is affected, but nothing is heard. These silent notes are great to put in rests before notes (at the same pitch), as they will 'correct' the pitch for the portamento and will give your note a 'clean' start.

Of course, there's no need for this technique if you disagree with my aesthetic assessment of the sequences in question, but try it out on your synth anyway - it might give you ideas for other stuff.

Mind you, I'm focussing on a small detail here because I think that, apart from this thing, the tracks I have listened to roll along very nicely thankyou.           Find my music here - www.soundclick.com/bands/0/qualiummusic.htm

hey qualium,

Thanks for taking the time to check out the tracks and post your thoughts, it's greatly appreciated. I'm gonna try out the "silent notes" trick and see if we can get that synth sounding cleaner and sweeter! I'm gonna check out your web-site too, thanks for the link!

adios amigo!
