I understand the times are changing.
I respect artists and labels offering music for free.
What I am interested in, are the pros and cons of going down that route and what would a free net label do in order to make up for the fact that the artist is not getting any money for giving away his/her music.

"Hopefuly" being the key word here. What I'd like to hear is actual experiences from both artists and labels.

i think its great thing as long they keep the quality and not realese anything that is free
its clean fun almost no cons to that
coming soooon (next week) Tsabeat full album free wav quality
more then 4 labels wanted it to realese on cd but the coffee money they offer is joke , if you cant sell more then 400 copies then i cant see why not to do it in my home cd burner hehe 1 shekel cost of a cd
not to mention greener planet happens in files www.sattelbattle.com

ok, since it did start with me this way , id elaborate my experience..
i made trax for fun , till a frend .. while i was on ship , put on p2p servers as promo , and it was well liked by many.. it continued again, with another promo ... labels came to know abt the music, and it was asked for..
again i gave some more for free.. still continue to.. depends on my work schedule to be precise.. making money sufficient to get thru the daily needs is good enuf.. i dont do gigs.. but im sure , u have doors open for em very soon. happened after my first promo .. was asked to play someplace.. i didnt accept.
all that was needed , was to be associated with a label i really liked, and within a line up i cud only dream of
now thats for a person who is in for music alone hehe
other than that.. for now. there are TOO many free va makers.. and most of it go unnoticed.
its good for bringing up fresh talent.. but myspace is doin that job well i suppose..
Free VA;s - others will continue bashing for the sales.. which i dont wish to get into ,cause i dont know shit abt the facts.,music from the ones on top of charts,, will definitely not go for free.. cause they make a living from music and gigs..
best thing that can happen - giving ur music for free.. +good line up+ good label,& u have a good promotion for sure.
(happens when a new label is coming up,)

The best for promotional purposes is probably to do both.
You will not reach out to some people if you are not released on CD, but most artists have tracks that never makes it to a comp or album, and rather than letting them rot away on a harddisk, why not make them available to those who want them (unless you think they are really bad of course)?
But if you have great track that good labels are interested in I would say it's certainly better promotion to release on CD...some people will buy it but more importantly you will most likely also get more "free" downloads from that as well.

Bob Dylan once wrote "the times, they are, a changin" Ron Burgandy never heard that song.

I think Spindrift has the right idea. If the label's artists have had tracks sitting around unreleased too long, just put them out there for free. It gets the artists and labels some attention and fans of specific artists can hear tracks that would otherwise sit around unreleased. There isn't really any down side to this, and it doesn't take that much effort on the label's side to organize the whole thing if you keep it simple.
  You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me? |

the only down side will show up when there is no selection of music and anything that is free will realese there , quality control is a must.
each label to his own in this game, the good ones will get all the benefits of it too in the end (busy web page etc) www.sattelbattle.com
