im about to invest in some monitors and i have narrowed my choice down to these two:
- Fostex PM-0.5 MkII
- Alesis M1 active mk2
They are pretty much the same price (Fostex are a little cheaper) and specs are also quite similar. Ive listened to each of these many many times and have even used both of them in friends home studios....one friends says go for the alesis and the other says go for fostex...im stuck.
honestly, i enjoy the sound from both of them and it is extremely hard to pick out of them.
i just want to get some advice from other people that own these or have used them in the past to let me know if there are any recuring problems or personal dislikes tey have with these speakers. Bear in mind that i will be using these for referencing all sorts of electronic music (i.e psytrance, prog, house, electro, ambient) and non electronic music.
Cheers!

Hey Ray!
I haven't tried out the MkII series from Fostex, though I own a pair of PM1 from the first series and I am very satisfied with them indeed. I perceive them as giving a great and well balanced feedback. I compose different kinds of music, hence I need a pair of monitors, as you wrote, suit for different kinds of styles. I write a lot of ambient/drone and such-a-likes besides psytrance, and with the aforementioned I would like to emphasise the monitors' great suitability for both bass intensive dance music as well as more subtle frequency ambient panoramas. I have always perceived the Alesis model you mentioned as being a bit too powerful and thus muddy in the lower frequencies. But, as you stated, all people have their likes and dislikes, and I know a few people who really dig the sound of the Alesis. I have not heard of any known issues with either of the monitor series you mentioned, though I have heard quite a few who agrees with me upon the issue of the Alesis being a bit muddy in the lower frequencies. Hence, perhaps it is more of a question of fine-tuning the Alesis and the room which they are used in to get them work good - thus you perhaps should take the fine-tuning process and everything that comes therewith in account when you make your choice? Just my thoughts on the subject..
It is quite troublesome to invest in new monitors, but despite which choice you make, I believe you will learn your monitors and make them "yours" anyway.

wait to have more money ,if you have a hifi system maybe you can do better mix with it really you can be very accurate on these monitors.i say that cause i have loose some money buying in this range, don t do it ! or maybe check the ns10 but i don t know if it s well suited for trance and wihtout a good amp maybe it s not a good choice. |

PoM - come on, you can't put all of them down.
I personally own a set of Alesis Mk1 and am happy with them. There are several fairly big producers I know that are still using just the Mk2's.
Havn't heard the Fostex though, so can't comment on a comparison. |

^^^ honestly i would...and i would love to get a pair of nice genelec or something in that range but honestly its not worth it for me. These speakers are for a home studio not a pro studio. and i would prefer to spend the extra cash on dual lcd's and upgrading my PC or even investing in soundproofing and fine tuning room accoustics. i have listened to both of these speakers in home studios and they are adequate for that situation.

^^^ Do you find any problems like scobah has mentioned concerning the alesis to be a bit muddy in lower freqs? |

well . havent heard the fostex.
i own a pair of the alesis and they are quite nice. i used to work on behinger truth 15 inch. and the alesis are alot smaller but they blow the berhinger away. they sound quite nice.
although i`ll be switching them for dynaudio soon.
cant say anything about the fostex. but as for the alesis they are quite nice and my mix sounds better on them than it used too on the berhingers.
if u dig deep enough u just might reach the sky...

I'd agree with the Alesis being just a tiny bit 'unclear' in the lower end. Although you can't really expect genelec/dynaudio/mackie quality from a 300$ set. For that amount of money, its a great set of monitors.
Buy them ! |

haven't heard fostex, but happy with alesis=)
the only thing that i don't like in them are TOO bright blue lamps on the front panel=)
but this problem can be easily solved with two pieces of dark paper or something like that=))
