how is it possible for a sample to sound the same backwards as forwards (like in the beginning of divine moments of truth)? i dont get this at all.
sorry if this has been posted before. the search doesn't always find what i want.

Divine moments of truth ?
Dunno that track....
I think it's done with reversed reverb...
What u do is this...
Reverse your (speech) sample, and play it trough a (long)reverb....record that and reverse it again...and...voila...there it is...
Dunno if that's what you're looking for, but it's a common trick....

Taken from an interview @ www.shpongle.com/hallucinogen:

"The introduction in the Shpongle track 'DMT' seems to be in 'reverse play', but when you hear it in "reverse" you hear the same thing. How is it possible for the voice to be the same in normal as in reverse play ?

This is because it is playing bi-directionally... it goes forwards then backwards... but tell me, do you sit around playing ALL your records backwards??"

That's weird! I've just heared the song and realised that I have done almost exactly the same start for my song Gardens of Babylon without hearing the song before. What are the chances of that happening? That's scary!!!!
Check this out!

It is reverse reverb like Psyx said. And After you have done what Psyx says you use normal reverb as well so that it will sound like reverse reverb if you play it backwards. And it is not the same backwards and fowards. It just seems this way because that guy speaks in a language we don't understand. If that guy was speaking english or your native language you will notice the difference.

I know the reverse reverb trick and actually the D.M.T. bi-directional thing, while similar in spirit, is something different. If you have turntables with reverse you can throw the record on reverse to see it, elsewise import the audio into wavelab, etc and then play it backwards to see exactly what they are talking about. The reverb trick is works as described for individual words and such, but the D.M.T. thing is a huge phrase probably running upwards of 30 seconds or so (I don't have the CD at hand to time it exactly). A lot of wave editiors have bi-directional settings or you could simply do the audio equivalent of the reverb trick by copying the section you want and pasting it backwards at the end of the original. Anywho, there are various ways for getting the desired effect so just play around until something cool happens.           New Album: Jikkenteki - Flights Of Infinity

Nonono... That won't work. Bi-directional is not just pasting the reversed to the end of the sample. If you cut out an arbitrary portion of a proper bi-directional sound, it should sound the same forw. and bacw. - so it's not really a palindrome...

How to do it then? I'm not entirely sure... If someone know, please enlighten us

to me this is a bi-directional sample ie. going backwards then forwards then backwards again.,
the point is that the guy is speaking chinese!, so this might already sound 'reversed' to some ppl.,

in fact, after reversing it the guy spoke forward chinese first, then reverse, then forward again.,

to trick you even more, there is indeed some sort of reverse reverb on top of the whole thing so you can easily think that it all belong to one long scentence.,., which it doesnt.,
also, the music that plays in the backgrou also tricks you into beliving that it's all one reversed sample.,

that's it....???? Im sure its not that simple, if it was, so many people would not have problems finding it out....

or maybe, since its so simple, we're trying to crack our brains....

reverse playback:
forward chinese, backward chinese, forward chinese

"or maybe, since its so simple, we're trying to crack our brains.... "
