Forms of art - not all psychedelic trance was created equal.

Well, I was arguing with a friend of mine, some of you may know him from the forum as one of the enthusaists of Finland's take on psytrance, him basically saying "this music is better" and then me saying "no it's not". Now, you may be surprised, but when it comes to musical tastes, I apply the guidelines to my words here, so this arguement was a bit more open than I allow myself here.

I started out with a metaphor, which I later developed a bit.

I was giving the example of Buddha Source's set at the DEAZ party, while he was giving the example of Timo's set at the Psychedelic Zion and DEAZ party as the opposite. He gave the (very correct) point of the way people responded to Timo's set in comparison with how people respond to progressive music at parties. Timo made people go wild like very few other DJs or live acts could (and I'm talking big leagues here).

And then it hit me - you can't compare the two styles. They are different types of music. When you listen to Texas Faggot at a party, the music fills every braincell you've got with it's total lack of logic and it's raw emotion. On the other hand, we have progressive, in which the music is a beat to sink into, where the games are much more subtle, much more in the background, much less shouting and noticeable.

The whole musical wave from Finland is surreal art. It shouts at your brain making you both think "this is not right" while being very enjoyable. The progressive (especially the minimal progressive) is much more abstract in it's form. You listen to it, and it's not what you get on the surface that makes you wonder, but there's a feeling, almost tangible, of what's behind the obvious... and what's behind the obvious can sometimes be more than what can be processed otherwise.

I was developing this metaphor some more, dubbing Goa as impressionistic - for it's emotional view and lack of adherence to the normal when it doesn't suit it's purposes, Techtrance as realistic, giving you that in-your-face power but in a very controlled and accurate way, Full-on as pop-art (excuse the expression, but pop-art doesn't have anything to do with the music), which takes proportions, colors and all other things and isn't afraid to make them much more extreme in order to suit it's purposes.

Each style of trance has it's own ideas behind it, it's different philosophy, and a different way to convey it's ideas. Each one can be said to be better than the rest, but it's really just a matter of taste. Within each style an entire world can be expressed, in infinite ways. Borders between the styles can be broken, even though sometimes it's not easy or instinctive.

In the end, all are art forms, and will always be debated by enthusiasts about which form offers more. But maybe people will come to admit that to each his own, and that maybe, just maybe, people could learn to see the art in the other forms.           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

u cant compare two styles - yes, its wrong to do it mostly, but when u know and feel the main idea behind the style u can decide if thats idea fit to your own ideoligical roots. for thats reasons i dont like agressive styles of music, thats not me.           Believe your soul !

you have a point ofcourse.but there are some people in finland currently working with stuff that goes in the middle of these styles, kiwa ofcourse is my main example, their new tracks are more strightforward than the last album, but there are other upcoming names like this-some of them will be most probably introduced to the public a bit more during this year.these groups cant really be put in the same cathegory as the rest of the finnish stuff as theyre not as "mental", and theyre not really your usual "progressive" either although there are some elements of that kind of sound too.

I had no better words to describe the Finnish mayhem than you did. That's exactly what i feel about Texas Faggot, Salakavala and alike.           Everyone in the world is doing something without me

I agree with you Kaz...
Each style has it's own ideas, and I personally like the best artists out of each style
We should learn to understand what's behind any style of music before we judge it.
