well after some months (a lil more than a year) of the last format my computer is calling another one. too much stuff installed, conflicts... it needs a fresh start.
since it's the first time i format since i started music creation i have some doubts i would like to be answered:
- Partitions
i have two 120GB HD's. one with all the installed stuff + operating system (winxp sp2) and another with the my personal files, mp3, downloads, etc.
i read in some website that a good idea was to have two operating systems on a computer... one for music production and another for everything else. i think it can be a wise idea but should i have 2 systems on a single HD (cause i'm not going to do anything with the personal files HD) ? or should i keep the way i had before ?
and if it's a good idea two have 2 OSs which should i choose for music production?
- Cubase SX
currently i use Cubase SX 2 for music production. i'm thinking in installing SX 3 after the format. my doubts are what will be the CPU usage difference between SX3 and SX2? and will i have any problem opening SX2 projects in SX3?
- Plugins
now i have my VSTDX plugins splitted between the Orion Platinium's plugin folder and SX's vstplugins folder. my idea is to create a Program FilesAudio Plugins folder shared between all the audio programs. will i have problems opening my cubase projects? and what about Orion Platinium... altought a very limited sequencer it's the best to dump your idea's and save them to use them later because no sequencer is quicker for it
Thanks for reading this to the end and in advance for replying
Stay cool, P.L.U.R |

having several partitions is ok, but different os i don't know why it should, if you're on just for music
i have several partitions, 1 os, and that has to be the ultimate... WinXP(home or pro edition, doesn't really matter)
but than my daw isn't connected to the internet
i don't know how orion works, but if you're planning to share a plugins folder beetween both appz, you'll have certainly problems loading cubases native plugins in orion since they run only in cubase or (guessing)wavelab

Dual-boot systems are good...used to have that a few years ago. However the best thing to have is 2 separate computers, one for music and the other for net and all the rest.
With dual boots for example you won't be able to work on your music while downloading stuff. If you end up enabling internet on your music machine then what's the point...
For net stuff you can get a cheap box and leave your good system dedicated to music.
Doesn't matter which way you go, use WinXP SP2 on both your setups. You can also use a "lite" XP for your music system which means a customized stripped down version of XP. That can be achieved by using apps like XPlite. The benefits are less OS components usually necessary for net/security stuff which you don't need for a DAW so you get a faster, more efficient OS.
In regards to Cubase, I moved from 2 to 3 and didn't find any major difference in terms of CPU consumption. SX3 seems more sluggish, especially when zooming in the waves, but CPU is more or less the same for me.
You shouldn't have problems opening SX2 projects in SX3.
Plugins,
Just install them to the Cubase plug folder and then add that path to Orion's custom plugin folder destinations.
When you run Orion for the first time after adding the path it will spit out some errors about not being able to load this and that plugin but after the first scan Orion will exclude those plugs from future normal startup scans. You shouldn't have any problems opening either Cubase or Orion projects this way. I also use both and indeed Orion is the quickest and most intuitive way to get some sounds happening which then can be exported to be used in Cubase.
Hope this helps
