hi all , got a question abt formatting the pc , now from past (bad) experience i know well enough to install and run fl , cubase , wavelab etc in a seperate directory than the system drive (where the os is installed) , no w every 8 months or so i invariably end up formatting the system drive coz some bug or the other just wont go otherwise .. but everytime i reinstall windows , none of my apps work again so i end up installing all of them again .. i huge headache . is there a workaround by wich i format and can keep my old settings as well , i suspect it mite be a registry backup issue but i dunno .. any advice ?

my os : windows xp pro

thanks
Saf

You really should just reinstall your apps again. It's a pain in the ass, but there are so many possible problems that could make them not work, it's easiest to just reinstall them when you format.

However, I keep all my music stuff in one folder, on my desktop. FL projects, Cubase projects, tutorials, samples, and VSTs all in one spot so they're easy to back up. It's nice that my VSTs stay sorted the way I had them, but you still have to reinstall some of them too.

Saf , yeah i already have backups , the issue is not that but how i can avoid the headache of reinstalling all of it again .

Orange , yeah i had that setup earlier , so i thought keeping em (apps and os) in seperate directorys will save me the hassle of installing both (os and plugs ) again but i found later to my dissapointment that even with keeping them seperate i still have to do it all again.

Thnx for the replys guys , now lemme be more clear about my dilemma

my os drive C:

my apps drive D:

now if when i format my c drive .. and reinstall windows , none of the apps seem to work , so i have to reinstal them again , im not sure but it seems to be an issue with the registry being wiped clean ..

there has to be a simpler way .. pls help

when u format the drive u delete al the registry entries and system file paths so its normal ur synths not to work!

u can back up ur settings! there are some apps that do that!

but the right way is to reinstall all ur apps so u can have a fresh registry just reinstaling win its not the best way for a good audio pc! some plugins can cause problems in ur registry and system so its essential a good clean install of the things u use and get rid of a the thingz u dont realy need!

make a perfect install with all stuff u need and use norton ghost to make a backup, once u need to reinstall everything you just need that backup and your setup will look just the same
