yes format is essential
the windows allready installed are configured for e different system!

so even if they work it will be a nightmare!

just format the extra hard disk and leave in blank...
but...you might have to do it offline (via some bootCD like Acronis, Partition Magic, etc..)
when you have 2 hard disks with windows installed on both it's sometimes difficult to "tell" the computer from which to boot.

ok this is really simple problem to solve...

i had to go about this the hard way when i wanted to install a legit copy of windows on my pc after years of cracked windows...

windows itself makes it near impossible to format the drive which has windows on it (the actual operating windows), however if there are two drives both with windows , it isnt too hard to format the drive which isnt your OS (assuming you have told the computer which is the boot drive)

so,...

quite simply

when i wanted to format my OS hD befor einstalling legit windows, i took my harddrive out, and used my brother computer...

i slaved my OS drive on my brothers computer (open the bios and insure that the computer knows which drive to boot off)

then all i ddi was using the windows format function (r-click...format) i wiped my OS drive

dont worry about fucknig the computer's OS that you are doing the format on cos, windows itself wont let you format the drive which the computer is currently running off

and then from there you can do a windows reinstall....or just keep it blank...

you just have to make sure the drive is slaved and the pins are set to slave....

i hope i explained this clearly enough

Having done this dozens, maybe hundreds or times, let me add some info that might help:

1) You can Create/Delete/Format partitions during a windows XP install. No need to format the disk first, since you can do it during the install.

2) Use NTFS (file system) unless you really need FAT, because NTFS tends to corrupt less in my experience.

3) If you are using SCSI, RAID, or SATA, make sure you have the drivers on a floppy disc. Yes, it has to be a floppy disc, because the windows XP install will not look anywhere else. Quite an oversight in my opinion, since most computers don't have floppy drives anymore.

4) If you have the drive space, create disk images/clone! Like sideFXed pointed out, you can create full backups that will save the registry, etc. I've been using Norton Ghost for years. After I get windows installed with all the drivers I'll create a ghost backup. Then I'll install my essential programs & make another ghost backup. I keep these 2 backups, so that I can always go back to 'the beginning' if I need to. I then create ghost backup each month (keeping the last 2 or 3), so I can always roll back to 'a month ago' if needed. I will also create a backup before doing any major installs. It only takes me about 8 minutes to restore a 20 GB ghost backup. Even doing this for a living, a manual install of XP with drivers takes over an hour, then add another 1-2 hours installing software....you see my point.

This backup system works well for me, because I have several hard drives, and store my data files (like cubase projects, samples, etc), on seperate drives, with their own seperate backup schedule. You only need to create a drive image/clone for the partitions that windows is installed on. Traditional backup programs are no good at backing up the registry & system files in use.

Did you make a new partition on the disk ?
Control panel -> administrative tools -> computer management -> storage -> right click on the new disk -> create partition
