The MDE-X that comes with the Korg Legacy package is pretty good... that's just an insert effect though, it will depend on what synth you put through it.
If anyone has any better suggestions for standalone instruments I'd like to hear them. It seems like there is a surprising lack of specific plugs for a sound so many people like.

For formants my only VST is the antares filter.
I find with a lot of formant plugins you get very little control over what's actually coming out.
On antares I route the signal paralell across 3 filters and then automate the frequencies.
You should be able to find a list of formant frequency groups online somewhere.
I do wish I had 3 hands though so I could tweak all 3 frequencies at once via a midi controller. |

one could go for setting up a kind of formant filter on his/her own
just get a cool eq you like, i like neon doin kind of these jobs, anyways any multiband eq will do the job (full parametric for sure).
adjust the bands according to the frequencyranges of the letter you want it to "talk". raise significant, put down things not needed. its some work for sure to get it tight. now if set one could go for mapping the "q" points on your controller. one poti each band, set start and end point so they will not get squeezed while sweeping.
well, thats about it imo, one for sure can do this with any integrated eq that comes with your daw. at least till now i had no case it had not been possible....
feel free to save as template and set another one for another letter. a,e,i,o,u and there you go. now you got the ability to choose the one fitting most the frequency range of your input sound.
hope kinda helped, happy friggeling
cheers
